Terrible experience with the front checkout lady. She is always there at night & I typically have zero issues With her or anything else. Something rang up wrong that I had clipped a coupon for. She said it didn't take it off because I was logged into a different nearby store. So she wanted to show me that if I changed the store the discount would be taken off. I was skeptical & just said that all the other coupons I clicked came off. She took offense to that & said "oh I've been working here for years, so I know how it works." Okay great, but unnecessary & had nothing to do with my situation. Then she tried to show me how to change stores & then clip it, but if I clicked something she didn't like or did a different way (that would have achieved the same result) so she was frustrated & scolded me like I'm a child. Guess what, her way didn't work anyway. She was so condescending to me, i just wanted my coupon taken off.. this was over not even $3. But after she talked down to me so long, I then just asked her please just take the items off, please. I don't want them. I was like near tears. She said she was only trying to help me, but she took them completely off & I told her she was a little aggressive. Which I did use the wrong word. She was really just condescending. So then she tried to make it about her race. That's when I just said it's not even about that, but i gave up with her because it would go nowhere. I have seen her treat other customers this way too. She said everyone knows how she is & nobody complains about her. Yeah, okay. They just don't say anything & never come back. I absolutely won't be back. Funny thing is she has changed over time. She acts like she owns the store now. She wasn't like this before. She was so loud, I could hear her at the back of the store. I think management has let her do what she wants, because she seems to be a good worker (as in she's there, she shows up) so her attitude has gotten worse, because she's unchecked. She needs a course on customer service & learn how to be kind to customers.

Yeah Safeway. Boo Trump tariffs. Grocery prices are through the roof. $7-$8 for a freaking pint of ice cream. $5 for a loaf of bread, ON SALE. $8-$10 for some beef hotdogs. It's redonkulous

Shameful experience. Avoid this store at all costs. The night shift lady at the self-checkout line (jet black hair and heavy black eyeliner, you can’t miss her) was incredibly rude and downright hostile and racist. My partner and I stopped by to grab a few things after our workout at Planet Fitness. Upon entering the self-checkout line she stood a few feet away from us and stared at us the entire time. At first I gave her the benefit of the doubt and continued to scan and bag our items. After five minutes and after more customers entered the self-checkout area and she kept staring at us, I asked her if there was a problem. She replied by saying “I’m just making sure you pay for everything”. As there were other customers checking out and I was the only brown guy in line, I thought this was a little weird. I replied and told her there were other customers that needed help - one even had to shout to get her attention - and asked her why she wasn’t watching them as well. She told me that I seemed “sketchy” and even threatened to kick us out. I told her I would not be leaving as I was a paying customer and that I was a somewhat regular shopper there, to which she replied “No you aren’t”. I asked her to please leave us alone so we could wrap up and pay and she kept making snide and racially charged remarks. I told her she was free to check our receipts against our shopping bags to ensure we had scanned and paid for everything but she refused, and instead called over her manager (guy with glasses) and incoherently and incorrectly mumbled something about us stealing. Her manager had to tell her multiple times to disengage and to stop escalating, all while she was combative towards him and us. Eventually she walked away and we finished bagging our items (after paying) and left. If you’ve never been discriminated against due to the color of your skin, it’s hard to put into words. It is one of the worst feelings you can experience and it makes you feel anger, sadness, and hopelessness all at once. My wish is that no one has to ever experience that feeling again. It is truly dehumanizing. My partner and I are loyal Safeway customers and in the 25 years that I have lived in the Shoreline/Lake Forest Park area I have never received such terrible service. It’s hard for me to ever want to go back to a place like this.

So sad to give this place a bad review after lots of great experiences here but one racist incident can spoil everything! My bf & I have come to this Safeway many times after the gym & the staff have usually been helpful, especially because I’m super active on the Safeway app & Sincerely Health so I’m constantly using coupons/loyalty points/etc. But tonight was a different story! We get to self checkout & I start scanning my items as we’re doing separate purchases (but I’m the coupon queen so he’s just gonna scan his items right after me using my rewards acct). We’ve done this a million times, often bagging our stuff together anyway, it’s just a finances thing. Well I guess the fact that my partner was the only brown skinned person in the vicinity caught an employee’s attention because this lady bee lined her way to us & was breathing down our necks as we went through our transaction(s). My bf was like ma’am is there a problem? Meanwhile patrons were waving her down for help! Eventually one guy finally had to call out to get her attention. And even then she barely acknowledged him, keeping her eyes fixed on us the whole time, like we’re convicts in a prison yard. We began making jabs amongst ourselves about her outrageous behavior, like, “dang I can’t believe they still teach racial profiling in the employee training manual,” etc. At this point she had run back from assisting the other patron so she could continue keeping a close eye on the sketchy Mexican dude (of course). Then this lady has the audacity to interject into our conversation in which we’re trying to shake off this incredibly uncomfortable situation using a little gallows humor to cope & starts accusing us of being thieves to our faces! At this point I’m flabbergasted. In a mocking tone she says “oh yeah I’m suuuree you alwayyys pay for alllll of your items.” Other highlights include her sticking her finger in our faces & yelling “YOU’RE SUSPICIOUS!” & threatening to kick us out. Anyway eventually someone who I presume to be a manager comes over & as we’re trying to describe the situation she is constantly rudely interrupting. I ask if this is acceptable behavior from employees & he does a sympathetic head nod but ultimately arrives at the conclusion that it’s their job to watch out for certain stuff. Hmm… I end up pleading with him multiple times to please go through our items & receipts! If you’re going to accuse us of something at least follow through on it instead of baselessly accusing your customers of stealing (despite watching them & only them literally the whole entire time) & publicly berating them. Honestly I’m disgusted. How shameful that Safeway condones this kind of behavior from their employees. It took me only a minute to find a similar review from a black man who was harassed by (presumably) this same woman at this location. Yikes!
