This store’s approach to “customer service” relies on employees shouting instructions across the aisle about which self-checkout lanes are open, rather than staffing an actual register or providing hands-on assistance. The experience feels less like service and more like being directed, despite multiple employees being present. There is activity, but little professionalism or meaningful customer support at checkout.
Customers are effectively forced to check themselves out, often with limited counter space and no bags readily available. This highlights a broader issue: corporations increasingly offload labor onto their customers while continuing to charge full retail prices. Tasks that were once part of basic service—scanning, bagging, and troubleshooting—are now unpaid work performed by the consumer. What is framed as “efficiency” is, in practice, cost-cutting that shifts time, effort, and frustration onto the very people funding the business.
The customer experience is further degraded by a culture of suspicion. Staff imply that receipt checks are mandatory, despite the fact that, at non-membership retail stores, customers are under no legal obligation to submit to receipt checks once a transaction is complete. Only membership-based warehouse clubs, such as Costco, can require this through a contractual membership agreement.
Taken together—the poor service model, forced self-checkout, inflated prices, lack of meaningful competition, and an unnecessarily adversarial customer experience—this store operates as if customers have no viable alternatives. In markets where corporations dominate, customers are no longer treated primarily as patrons but as a captive revenue source. This is less a functioning service economy and more a system where shareholder convenience comes at the expense of human service and basic dignity. I will not be shopping here again

Wendi here is awesome! Greeted me with a smile and asked how I was, I joked with her about how I hated self checkout and she offered to ring my cart up for me. She happily scanned everything! Thank you Wendi!
