Another customer (white male) came after me and also rang the bell. When the employee arrived, he walked past me, opened the case, took that customer’s bottle, and handed it directly to him. When I asked for my bottle, the employee opened the case again, took my selection — but instead of handing it to me, he told me he had to carry it to the register and walked away with it. I was still shopping and wanted to pick up other items. The only difference between me and the customer who was handed his bottle was race. Whether intentional or not, this was unequal and humiliating treatment. If Safeway has a policy that employees must carry alcohol to the register, it should be applied to everyone, not selectively. Safeway should train employees to follow the same procedure for every customer. Respect and fairness should not depend on who you are.
