Went in this morning to order a few breakfast sandwiches from the deli, this is what they advertise on a deli sign above your head. Was told we only do burritos, was told they pre-made sandwiches and were at the cooler(now cold). I stated I'd like freshly made sandwiches and again told they only did burritos, so can do those fresh but not sandwiches. When asked why not wasn't given an answer and brushed off. So here I am writing this review. Great job safeway deli workers. 👌

This safeway in Burien deserves way more credit than it probably ever gets. In a city where retail workers are dealing with some of the toughest conditions in the Puget Sound area, the employees here show up every single day and hustle like I’ve rarely seen at any grocery store, chain or otherwise.Let’s be real: this location sits in a part of Burien that has very visible struggles with addiction, homelessness, and theft. Walk in on any given afternoon and you’ll likely see security escorting someone out, an employee calmly talking a person down who’s having a mental-health episode in the aisles, or a cashier having to void an entire transaction because someone tried to walk out with a cart full of unpaid groceries. Shoplifting is a daily, constant issue here; I’ve personally seen people stuff steaks down their pants, load backpacks with liquor, and sprint out with entire cases of beer. The alarms at the door go off so often that most regulars don’t even flinch anymore.Yet somehow, some way, the staff keeps this place running. The cashiers stay polite even when they’re clearly on edge. The deli and meat counter people still take the time to slice things exactly how you ask, even when someone is yelling in the background. Stockers are restocking shelves while literally stepping around people who are passed out in the aisles or arguing with security. I watched a produce guy spend ten minutes helping an elderly customer pick out the perfect avocados while simultaneously keeping an eye on two teenagers who were acting suspicious near the flower display. That’s next-level multitasking. The store itself is surprisingly well-maintained given the chaos it endures. Floors are clean, shelves are stocked better than most Safeways I’ve been to in wealthier neighborhoods, and the hot food/salad bar is usually fresh. Prices are normal Safeway prices (use the app and clip digital coupons or it’ll hurt), and the selection is solid for a metropolitan store (decent ethnic foods section, good beer and wine choices, and a surprisingly large organic/natural foods area).Lines can get long because they’re often short-staffed for the volume and the drama, but I’ve never seen a cashier lose their cool. The pharmacy staff, in particular, deserve medals; dealing with people in active addiction who are trying to fill (or sometimes scam) scripts, all while keeping HIPAA and staying professional, is not easy. Is it the most relaxing grocery shopping experience? Absolutely not. If you’re sensitive to seeing open drug use in the parking lot, people panhandling aggressively at the entrance, or the occasional screaming match near the self-checkout, this probably isn’t your vibe. But if you can tune that out and appreciate the fact that the employees here are basically running a full-time security and social-work operation on top of normal retail duties, you’ll leave impressed. I give it four stars instead of five only because corporate could help these workers a lot more: hire more security, install better theft deterrents, maybe pay hazard bonuses, anything. The fact that this store functions as well as it does is a testament to the grit of the people who clock in every day. This Safeway isn’t for the faint of heart, but the staff are absolute warriors. Bring patience, shop with your head on a swivel, tip your imaginary hat to the employees, and you’ll get in and out just fine. They’re holding down the fort in circumstances that would break most teams. Respect.
