About

RestaurantAmerican Restaurant
Food For Thought is a family restaurant in Williamsburg, Virginia, that’s as engaging for the mind as it is for the senses. Surrounded by quotes and images of inventors, scientists, and social leaders, our atmosphere aims to inspire families and encourage discussion over wholesome, delicious food. Food For Thought’s menu is as diverse as the great thinkers themselves. Our diner’s choices vary from American classics, ethnic dishes, healthy vegetarian options, or one of our nightly seafood specialties. The foundation of our menu is built upon American staples like our famous Fork Tender Pot Roast, Grandma’s Meatloaf, and “fall off the bones” ribs. America grew up on these meals, and we love paying homage to our country’s past. To complement these favorites, we added some newer, more contemporary flavors and ideas like Pad Thai, Jamaican jerk chicken, flavored butters, and original vegetarian dishes. To ensure everyone finds something they love, we also provide a gluten-free menu, a kid’s menu (with healthy options!) and our “Magic 55” senior’s menu. Our food is prepared with love and served with pride. A truly wonderful meal is a combination of good food and good conversation -- so talk about the special people featured here. Talk about the contributions that these people have made to the world! Have a meaningful conversation about how everyone can be great in his or her own way

They have a gluten-free menu with a good amount of choices. They take allergies and food intolerances seriously. The Island Jerk Chicken with accompanying Jasmin mushroom rice (pictured) was delicious. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Stick to Your Ribs Snacker appetizer; the meat came off the bone easily. They brought me a complementary gluten-free roll wrapped in aluminum foil and the other items I ordered came with American flags which is their way of marking the dishes for people with allergies/intolerances too be extra careful to avoid cross-contact. There are neat quotes on the walls. It's pricier than I'd prefer and it's popular so there was a long wait to be seated, but I plan to come back the next time I'm traveling through the area.

We were thrilled to discover such a wonderful restaurant on our trip to Williamsburg to safely take our Celiac daughter. Not only did we all feel confident prior to the meal with such great care of the staff, she never got sick and we ate here two nights in a row! Thank you, Food For Thought, for providing delicious meals the whole family can enjoy and feel good about. We will cherish our memories at your restaurant!

The food was delicious! I highly recommend the meatloaf and pot roast. I loved that there were some kids' books at the entry to read while we waited for our table... And with how popular this place is, you could be waiting for a while. We were lucky and only waited about 10 minutes at 5pm, but by the time we left around 6:30, the wait was up to 1 hour. The service was friendly and helpful, although perhaps a bit overwhelmed (but understandably so).

A Delicious Journey at Food for Thought in Williamsburg, VA! Food for Thought in Williamsburg continues to delight with its thoughtful blend of American comfort classics, generous portions, and creative twists. The restaurant's warm, quote-filled ambiance perfectly complements the inviting menu, making it an ideal spot for a memorable meal with family or friends. Our recent visit showcased an impressive variety of dishes, each beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. We started with the Crispy Chicken Tenders (Smoke and Fire). The golden, craggy coating looked irresistibly crunchy, and the tenders were perfectly cooked—juicy inside with a light herb dusting. Paired with crisp celery sticks and a smooth, creamy dipping sauce, this appetizer delivered satisfying texture and a comforting start to the meal. Next came the Fried Shrimp platter, a standout seafood offering. Plump, wild-caught shrimp arrived with a light, golden batter that stayed beautifully crisp. Served alongside a generous portion of seasoned fries, vibrant steamed broccoli, and a rich, speckled orange dipping sauce, the dish felt both indulgent and balanced. The shrimp were tender and flavorful, making every bite a treat. The That Nutty Chicken (Pistachio and Parmesan-encrusted chicken) was a true highlight. The pan-roasted cutlet featured a gorgeous crust of chopped pistachios and cheese, topped with a luxurious roasted garlic mushroom sauce that cascaded beautifully over the plate. Served with creamy mashed potatoes (visible beneath) and a side of bright, fresh broccoli, this dish combined elegant flavors with hearty comfort. The nutty crunch and savory sauce created a harmonious, restaurant-quality experience. No visit to Food for Thought would be complete without their signature Stick to Your Ribs Baby Back Ribs. These "fall-off-the-bone" pork ribs shone with a glossy, slightly sweet and smoky BBQ glaze that caramelized to perfection. The meat was incredibly tender, pulling away effortlessly, and the generous portion was accompanied by fluffy mashed potatoes, steamed broccoli, and a bold house BBQ sauce on the side. This classic delivered everything you could want in ribs—rich, sticky, and deeply satisfying. Finally, we enjoyed the Crispy Fish and Chips (or fried fish fillet). The golden, seasoned coating on the fish was light and shatteringly crisp, encasing flaky, moist white fish. It came with a pile of perfectly fried fries, a bright lemon wedge for freshness, creamy coleslaw, and a tangy tartar-style dipping sauce. This dish captured the best of classic seafood comfort food with excellent execution and generous portions. Every plate arrived hot, colorful, and thoughtfully garnished with fresh herbs, reflecting the kitchen's attention to detail. The sides—particularly the vibrant broccoli and creamy mashed potatoes—were consistently well-prepared and complemented the mains beautifully. Service was friendly and efficient, enhancing the overall experience in this charming Williamsburg gem. Food for Thought excels at turning familiar favorites into standout meals through quality ingredients and skilled preparation. Whether you're craving seafood, hearty meats, or creative chicken dishes, this restaurant consistently delivers. We left fully satisfied and already planning our return. The Manager & Waitress both made sure our lunch was splendid!Highly recommended—5 stars!
