We visited Zoll Vineyard on 3/29 and asked for a sample of their Merlot. The officious gentleman behind the counter told me they do not have samples, only 2 ounce tastes for $3.25. This was a first after having received free samples at every winery, wine shop, restaurant, bar and grocery store I’ve ever entered in Virginia. Later, I read a three month old review in which another customer complained about the no free sample policy. The owner replied: “All alcohol must be charged for in Virginia it’s a state law.” That, plain and simple, is a LIE. The law is:
Virginia Code, Title 4.1, Chapter 2, Article 1, ¶ 4.1-201.
A. A. Nothing in this subtitle or any Board regulation adopted pursuant thereto shall prohibit:
10. Any retail on-and-off-premises wine and beer licensee, his agent or employee, from giving a sample of wine … not to exceed 2 ounces … no more than five ounces of wine … per person per day.
In addition, the owner’s review comment stated: “We charge $1 for 2 samples or $3 for 7 samples.” The officious gentleman behind the counter pointed at the wine menu and told me we only sell 2 ounce tastes. I don’t know which statement is a LIE.
I made the second mistake of day and paid for a taste of the Merlot. He said among other things that the Merlot is spicy. Their Merlot is not the typical medium to deep ruby or garnet color; it is spicy - clove, ginger and/or cinnamon; and is served with a lime wedge. In a blind tasting, no one could guess it is a Merlot.

I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry…that in 9 years I have never ventured the 19 whole minutes out here until today, when my husband and I found ourselves in an impromptu day date.
The sangria flight was mind blowing and my husband relished every red he touched.
The food is my jam!. So many small bites to enjoy on every dish. I love meals where you get 80 different bites and that’s what we got between the pimento dish, goat cheese dish, and Italian charcuterie.
The price was beyond reasonable for the quality of food. Frank and all the staff were simply pleasant, easy, and well informed.
We will come again, and again, and again.

We have been going to Zoll for a number of years now. It’s the best place in the area. Every time I go home to Mathews, VA I make sure to stop by. Whether you prefer sweet wine or dry they have it all.
The food is the unique part of this winery. 5 star unique menu. And they specialize in pickles, pickled green tomatoes and slaws to die for that pair so well with some of the wines. A must go to.
