We were a party of six on a busy Saturday night. We had enjoyed our previous meals there but they were all on weekdays. I think there are growing pains for busy Saturday night crowds. Unfortunately there was a mixup and one of our party didn't get served until the rest of us were finished. We asked several times about his food to no avail. They ultimately did the right thing and removed his entree from the bill.
Otherwise they food was great. High quality fish artfully prepared. Nice saki selection. Beautiful decor.
We will be back.

The restaurant is beautifully decorated. Very comfy booths that could seat a large party. I would bring out of town guests here. It can get pretty loud in there if it's full since it's very open. The staff are friendly. There's a little matcha latte desk at the front that you can order for takeout. The drinks looked good.
I loved my Midori punch. The crispy rice tuna tartare was good. The spider roll was lacking, wouldn't order again. The unagi don was very good. The eel was perfect, but the rice wasn't soft. It tastes like it needed to be cooked longer or maybe it was stale.
"I recently visited Akeno Sushi Bar & Thai in Old Town, and it was an absolute standout. The atmosphere is the first thing you notice—it’s stunningly designed, luxurious, and modern, making it a perfect spot for either a date night or a high-end lunch.
The food quality is top-tier. We started with the Yellowtail Jalapeño, which was incredibly fresh with a perfect yuzu-truffle kick. For rolls, the Red Dragon Roll and the Double Toro Roll were highlights; the fish-to-rice ratio is spot on, and the presentation is like a work of art.
What really sets Akeno apart is the service. The staff is attentive and genuinely friendly, which makes the whole experience feel personal. If you're in the DMV area and looking for high-quality sushi with a unique fusion twist, this is easily one of the best spots in Alexandria. Don't skip the Mango Cheesecake for dessert—it’s the perfect finish!"
We had a good lunch here the other day, so we decided to come back today. We ordered tempura don and tonkotsu ramen. Unfortunately, this time the food wasn’t great.
The fried shrimp tasted like the frozen kind you can buy at any grocery store. The shrimp were very small, and the fries weren’t crispy at all. The rice wasn’t good either.
As for the ramen, the broth was too salty. The total came to $50, including water. The price is too high considering the quality of the food.

Walking into this place is a nice experience - provided you keep on your coat. The décor is really beautiful and elegant. The temperature was very cold! I noted that one of the staff was still wearing her knit hat. I couldn't blame her! It had to be about 64º in there even far away from the door. We ordered crab rangoon, ramen and the shrimp & veggie tempura. The crab rangoon appeared to be pre-made, out of a box. It didn't taste bad - just not the freshest and not very hot either. Next came the tempura. The tempura batter was perfect, golden, crisp, and very tasty and flavorful! However, it came out at room temperature. (?!?) When I bit into a shrimp, it was cold - fridge cold. That was such a bummer. You can't reheat tempura. I am puzzled as to why it wasn't all piping hot. We were some of the first customers in for the day, and the tempura came out well before the ramen, so it's not as if it should have been sitting. Some of the tempura veggies were warm, but still - not hot. Next came the ramen. The broth was very good, but the ramen was comprised basically of just noodles, broth, and meat. We tried to get extra meat (chicken), but they were out. Again, this was odd, since the restaurant had only just opened. We got shrimp added to the ramen instead...but instead of putting in simmered or broiled shrimp, it was tempura shrimp, which of course got really soggy when put into a hot broth. Those shrimp tempura were hot, at least, as was the broth, so that was nice. However, other than the meat, broth, and noodle, there wasn't much in there. Such a bummer, because we expected great things with all the high ratings - at least hot food.
