Their Texas twinkies and flan are good, but I wouldn’t recommend much beyond that. After trying this restaurant twice, I won’t be returning because the food has been pretty disappointing. What really gets me are the sauces, I tried the red, green, and white sauces and they’ve all been bad. I visited in the off season, maybe they cook better when Cody has all the summer traffic, who knows.

We were recommended this restaurant by our grandparents who are locals. The food is phenomenal. We happened to come in on a day where it was short staffed and busy. It was fine as were on vacation and weren’t in a rush. Our waitress was absolutely darling and doing her best to her job as the only waitress. We were seated in the back and could hear what I assume was the manager (I pray it wasn’t the owner) berating and yelling at the waitress. I understand tension is high and mistakes are made when you’re short staffed, however it was incredibly tacky and unprofessional. I give our waitress 5 stars, however, the manager could use some training. Perhaps that’s why they were short staffed.
The food tasted absolutely amazing. The staff were very friendly.
Where do I start? First off, Zapata translates to foot in English & I think that is what they stick in their food for flavoring. They bill themselves as New Mexico Mexican food but it is far from it. I lived in Albuquerque for 3 years & Mexico for a little over a year so I know both Mexican & New Mexico food pretty well. Hatch chilli’s come from NM, not Pabalano peppers, and that is the pepper they use. I tried the “chili verde dinner” that they claim is award winning & it was so dry I had to ask for a glass of water to add some moisture to it. It tasted like it was several days old and was so bad I only ate about 1/2 of it. I got 1 oz of guacamole in a 2oz pc for $3! I was also hit with a $1.50 charge for 1oz of sour cream.Crazy high prices for the portion's! The corn tasted like it was several days old as well & was lacking any flavor or texture. I was very disappointed in the whole meal.
Before I made my choice of what to eat, I asked about their $16 burrito & was told that if I wanted Carne Asada I would have to pay an extra $7 making it a $23 burrito!
They have no lunch specials & in my opinion, everything is way over priced. I was really excited to stop here for lunch but left feeling shocked at the total of the bill, very unhappy with the food, disappointed that I stopped here to eat. I also left still hungry because I did not eat the food.
Seating was fast and the staff was very friendly and understanding, though the actual table service was just okay when it came to checking in on us. Unfortunately, the food really missed the mark. We tried both the ground beef and shredded beef tacos, and they were not good at all. The "hard taco" shell was actually just a flour tortilla that had been fried—leaving it completely rubbery and tough to eat rather than crispy. The beef filling lacked flavor. Nice people, but I wouldn't return for the food.
