This Hmong-owned restaurant/banquet hall, The Mekong, might be out of the way compared to all the other Hmong-owned stores/businesses/restaurants in the area, but it certainly doesn’t lose out to those establishments!
We ordered the egg roll, Hmong sausage (with sticky rice), angel wing, beef larb (with sticky rice), papaya salad (with sticky rice), and nam vanh. The egg roll has a nice outside texture and filling that tastes wonderful. The sauce that comes with this dish is nice and flavorful. The Hmong sausage tastes so tender and flavorful and savory. It’s my favorite Hmong sausage out of every Hmong restaurant I’ve visited in the area. The jeow som that comes with this dish tastes fishy, garlicky, and spicy (exactly how I like to make this). I didn’t get a chance to try the angel wing my friend ordered, but he said he enjoyed it and found it interesting how the wings are mostly deboned. I enjoyed the sauce it came with. The larb has beef that’s nicely seasoned, as I was able to taste the rice powder, fish sauce, and fermented fish sauce/padaek in every bite. I only wish it came with more of the sauce mix, as the plate I was presented with was a bit dry for my liking. The papaya salad’s the Hmong/Lao version and not the Thai version (because I vastly prefer the Hmong/Lao version over any other version, especially the Thai version). I’m glad they had an option of letting me choose how spicy I wanted the larb and papaya salad, just as I’m glad they honored my request of putting ten Thai chili peppers in both. The two salads came out nearly as spicy as I would’ve liked. I’m also glad they let me adjust how bitter I wanted the larb, resulting in my asking for their most bitter level. The Thai iced tea has a nice blend of sweetness and sugar and cream. The nam vanh has a wonderful coconut taste and the contents of it are just the right taste and texture.
We really loved the service. From the moment we entered the restaurant half of the building, a worker greeted us. Another worker came to bring out our food and check on us every so often during our meal. I love how we got to hang out after our meal to watch the sports games the restaurant was playing on their TVs. I want to give the restaurant three additional points. First, for allowing us to stay for as long as we wanted after we finished our meal and paid. Second, for the staff member who still came to check on us and take plates out of our way after we finished our meal and paid. Third, for the same staff member who gave us new sauces to go when I asked for to-go containers for our sauces after we finished our meal and paid. I guess I could give the restaurant a fourth point for playing a St. Louis Cardinals game on their TVs as we were about to leave. How did they even know I love the Cardinals the most, without me even telling them so or telling them how I’m born and raised near the Missouri side of St. Louis? I guess I could give the restaurant a fifth point since my friend loves the atmosphere so much that he’d consider having a potential wedding party/banquet here.
Anyways, compared to all of the other Hmong-owned restaurants in South Central Wisconsin/Dane County, this one’s certainly on the same level as them (though I find all the Hmong-owned restaurants in this area to be pretty wonderful and amazing)! My friend and I originally planned to come to this restaurant two weeks before our visit, but sadly couldn’t come that day since this restaurant was closed to the public due to them hosting a party. If only the restaurant would’ve posted on their Facebook page then that they were closed for a private event, but at least they posted in advance of the day we ended up coming back (July 4) to let everyone know they are open! Their current menu’s different than what they have on their website and on Facebook, so I hope they’ll update what they have online! We’re sad two of the items we ordered, angel wings and nam vanh, and an item we didn’t get a chance to order, khao piak sen, were specials only for July 4, so we hope they’ll bring these back!
