- BSBill ShellshearJun 10, 20261.0Yesterday I was coming home from a trip to get some supplies and visit family in Portland as it was getting late I stopped by the Woodland Washington Safeway store to purchase something I could cook at home for dinner. I purchased a package of Alaskan cod that was on sale, brought it home, opened the vacuum sealed package and noticed a strong fishy smell. I rinsed the fish in cold water and patted dry (still smelled off), added a little butter, lemon juice and capers to the filets and baked at 425 for 15 minutes then checked with a thermometer probe which read 158 degrees Fahrenheit (a bit overcooked). Although I ate the fish and it tasted a bit off I'm very disappointed with this Safeway store. I have purchased "fresh" cooked whole crab before that also did not smell fresh and tasted a bit off. I've done quite a bit of crabbing and know what fresh cooked crab tastes like and the crab like the fish yesterday did not seem fresh by any standard. My hope is instead of selling borderline fish at a discount just dispose of it and sell fish a person can enjoy without fearing foodborne illness.
