The managers of this location fill the store with such an overwhelmingly bitter, negative and rude atmosphere, that I actually had to walk out without making a purchase, after asking for help with a dollar-off coupon.
I feel terrible imagining having to spend an entire day in the presence of such threatening and angry people.
I always wondered why the store feels like it's experiencing an on-going hostage situation, and now I know.
It's worth a trip down the street to the QFC nearby. The prices were better, and nobody breached my personal space for asking a question.
Pre-response: thanks so much to the "Owners response" to my review. I know you wont take this feedback seriously, and that you are not sorry. Apologies require remorse. You might as well not make false claims or statements here. Many complaints have been made concerning mistreatment and im sure the HR files on these managers are inches thick.
I would like further assistance-- retrain your leadership staff on appropriate social interactions.
I’m honestly still upset writing this.
My mom went to the Safeway in Ballard after her workout. She’s a senior and doesn’t speak much English. She didn’t buy anything and was just leaving, but she was suddenly stopped at the exit, asked for a receipt, and told to open her bag.
Because she couldn’t really communicate, she felt like she had no choice but to go along with it.
Inside her bag were just her workout clothes. Nothing from the store.
What made this feel even worse is that while this was happening, two white customers walked out right next to her. They also didn’t buy anything, but they were not stopped or questioned at all.
The whole situation made her feel singled out. From our perspective, it felt discriminatory.
And it didn’t end there. The staff at the door seemed to realize this wasn’t necessary, but when a manager came over, things actually got worse. Instead of helping, the manager was dismissive, said they couldn’t understand her, and just told her to leave.
My mom even tried to use a translation app on her phone to explain how uncomfortable she felt, but the manager didn’t even try to understand. He brushed her off, said they don’t have an email, and told her to go to the website if she wanted to complain. In the end, she could only get a phone number from him.
There was no patience and no respect. It just felt like they wanted to get rid of her as quickly as possible.
She walked out feeling embarrassed, confused, and honestly hurt. No one, especially an older person who doesn’t speak much English, should be treated like that.
This was not just poor service. It felt deeply disrespectful and unacceptable.
Safeway really needs to take a hard look at how situations like this are handled.

Employee's are brainwashed and trained to harrass you and follow you around the store. Then try to tell me I have to show a receipt as I leave the store. If the second entrance is locked that's a fire hazard law violation. Town & County is a block away with better produce & healthier options.

We were just shopping at the Safeway in Seattle, Store 1143, 8340 15th Ave, and we’ve never experienced anything like this before. We’re tourists from Germany and aren’t entirely familiar with how things work here, so we need a little help now and then. Among other things, we wanted to buy a bottle of wine, and I was asked for my date of birth. So far, so good. I hesitated briefly to make sure I gave the correct information. Then I was asked for my ID, and I presented a German document. Upon seeing this, K... refused to let me make the purchase. When I asked what was wrong, she said it was required by law and that we should leave the store.
My wife wasn’t allowed to shop with her ID either, and when we asked what we had done wrong, she said that K... would call the police if we didn’t leave immediately.
From our perspective, this is completely unacceptable, especially since neither of us looks under 21 anymore. It’s totally fine that they check, but we’ve never experienced such unfriendly behavior before.
A majority of the employees are great. However, there is one who proves that ufcw 21 is only there to protect employees who should be fired.
Apparently she's a supervisor or assistant manager. She's been there for years and only comes out of her hiding spot in the room behind the customer service desk to go sit in her car or sit down by the delivery trucks. She shows nothing but disdain for customers and staff.
If stores would fire people like Lena who do nothing but show up and hide their whole shift, maybe we could save a penny or two when we shop.
