We decided to give Hot Fish House a try despite seeing some mixed reviews because the website mentioned Gullah Geechee/Southern-style food, so I just knew the food was about to be GOOD. Unfortunately, our experience was definitely more of a miss than a hit.
We ordered the large seafood platter for about $40, which came with fried catfish, shrimp, oysters, and fries. We also ordered lemon pepper and buffalo wings for about $20, plus the banana pudding. Our total was around $66.
The first thing that caught my attention was how quickly the food came out. We waited less than 10 minutes, and as soon as they brought it to the table I told my husband, “There is no way all of this was fried fresh that fast.” Unfortunately, once we started eating, I felt like I was right.
The catfish was seasoned really well, and I could tell it probably would have been delicious if it had been freshly fried. The shrimp was alright, but the fries that came with the seafood platter were burnt and tasted like they had been cooked in old grease. Overall, a lot of the fried food just didn't have that fresh, hot, crispy taste you expect when you're paying $40 for a seafood platter.
The wings were okay, but again, freshness would have made a HUGE difference.
Now, the banana pudding surprised me because it didn't have actual banana pieces in it, which I personally loved 😂, but it was very soggy and had a strong cinnamon/spice flavor. I'm not sure exactly what was in it, but it wasn't quite what I expected from banana pudding.
I will give them credit for the atmosphere and decor. The restaurant has personality! I loved the red, black and white theme, the checkered floors, the umbrellas hanging from the ceiling, the greenery, and all of the unique touches. The fire truck and Hot Fish House vehicles outside were really cool too. You can tell someone put thought into creating the brand and atmosphere. I did notice several flies flying around inside, though, which wasn't pleasant while we were eating.
Unfortunately, we ended up throwing away most of the food, which was disappointing after spending $66.
Maybe we came at the wrong time or caught them on an off day because I can see the potential. The seasoning was there, especially on the catfish. I truly think if everything had been dropped fresh when ordered, our experience could have been completely different.
For me, this place may be a hit or miss depending on the day/time you go. I read the negative reviews beforehand and still wanted to give them a fair chance and form my own opinion. Based on this experience, I don't think we'll return, but I genuinely wish the owners and staff the best and hope they find a formula that works consistently because the concept, atmosphere, and potential are definitely there.
