  The customer service here is the WORST! Rude cashiers and horrible supervisors. Was sold an expired crab dip recently, expired by a WEEK. Also, they have a very aggressive 3rd party receipt checker at the front door who makes the entire experience of this store feel unpleasant.

  I used to shop at the Safeway on Kent-Kangley Rd, but no more. The entrance and parking lot are constantly overrun with homeless people who are openly smoking fentanyl, yelling, screaming, and causing chaos. It’s not just uncomfortable — it’s genuinely unsafe. Staff seems to ignore it completely, and there’s zero security presence. Customers (including families with kids) have to walk through this every time they want to enter the store. Management needs to address this immediately by bringing in actual security or working with local authorities. No one should have to deal with this just to buy groceries. Won’t be returning until they fix this major problem.

  Receipt checks at stores like Safeway are generally legal in the sense that employees can ask to see your receipt. However, customers are not legally required to comply, and the store cannot detain you unless they have a reasonable, specific suspicion of theft. That said, the practice itself pushes against core civil liberties and basic consumer norms. It treats every paying customer as a potential suspect, which conflicts with the principle that people should not be subjected to inspection without cause. Once a purchase is completed, the items belong to the customer—being asked to prove ownership immediately afterward blurs that line and implies continued control by the store. While technically “voluntary,” these checks often rely on social pressure and implied authority, making them feel more like a requirement than a choice. This creates a coercive dynamic where customers comply to avoid confrontation, not because they’ve agreed in any meaningful sense. More broadly, normalizing suspicionless checks at store exits lowers the standard for what consumers are expected to tolerate. It opens the door to increasingly intrusive practices and risks uneven enforcement, where some individuals may be singled out more than others. In short, even if receipt checks are legally permissible, they represent a subtle but real erosion of personal autonomy and the presumption of innocence—and that’s a practice that deserves clear limits.

  Men’s bathroom needs some work. Toilet seat covers just laying around, some on the ground. Toilet is shakey and also has too much standing water. Splashes back up when you’re pooping (yuk!) and the air vent above the toilet is completely CLOGGED.
