Haggen boasts on their sites as locally owned in Bellingham. That simply is not true. And sadly, I went to the south mall location off of college parkway for the sole purpose of getting sliced pastrami from the deli. They no longer have a deli. They have not had a meat deli for 4 years I was told. I cannot select from maybe three brands, price compare, and see to it the meat I am having sliced is done cleanly and how I liked Not to mention having an ongoing rapport with a deli person. I am supposed to buy sealed in plastic meat off the shelf. And let the bacteria begin from the packing let alone whomever examines the package before me. It is about as sanitary as buying shoes at a shoe store. At least they use spray. The other products in the "deli" area are packaged elsewhere and sent in which is not fresh. Their packing that pollutes the world with plastic is so difficult to open I opened the sliced honeydew with a hammer. Smashing it with a fork did not work. I bought straw berries that were rotten on the bottom. (I did examine prior to purchase) Here is the question; Why would I trust a company WITH MY FOOD that most of the sea food is from the southern hemisphere where regulations are non existent, other food is packed, the fruit is from who knows where. If we are going to move to a vendor style packing system why not just put it all in a vending machine and I can pick my pastas and such without others touching them? Fruits the same way? And not have to go to Haggens or any store? If you are not local as a store, are not providing local products, and I am sure you do not prioritize employing whatcom county born employees first, then get out of my city. Your are a farce.

This has to be the stingiest grocery store next to Kroger. We had a $5 coupon that was left at home. So we took the receipt and the coupon to the store to get it adjusted. The person at customer service, or so they call it, lol, explained that this is something they don't like to do, and in order to accommodate the request we would have to bring all the purchased items back and return them first (laughing emoji here). At this point I need to emphasize that we are talking about a $5 dollar coupon. I have shopped at many grocery stores over the years and frequently used coupons. Safeway, for example, owned by the same company as Haggen, is very customer friendly. This Haggen branch, Barkley village, Bellingham, has always managed to be extremely rude and stingy. It was finally time to leave the deserving review for this poor way of managing. Shame on you, you don't deserve to be in our neighborhood.

Our neighborgood store which is convenient . They offer some premade meals which are easy to reheat or Chinese hot to order, among other options of soup, chicken nuggets, pot pies. The deli has a good selection. The produce offers fresh fruits and vegetables and has a salad bar. They have in-store bakery, meat and fish counter. Fresh flowers florals including arrangements and fresh picked. They also have a pharmacy. This store is clean, the workers are friendly and helpful. They will load your car if you ask for help.
