The bakers at the Haggen in Barkley did an amazing, above and beyond job on my daughter’s 8th birthday cake. Gotta give credit where credit is due! My daughter wanted a “sloth with flower crown” birthday theme (so Bellingham!) and the bakers at Haggen understood the assignment, and then some. Cake tasted great too. Historically, Safeway has been the better taste choice - but not this time! We had chocolate with buttercream frosting and dare I say it, the cake tasted better than some of the speciality bake shops in town.
The head female baker who took care of our order and was able to squeeze us in last minute, you are a true MVP. She went out of her way to make sure my daughter had a special birthday. We were okay with a generic cake, but this amazing woman made it happen for us. 12/10 for taste, presentation, effort, timeliness, all the above. The adults even came back for seconds on the cake, so you know it was good! Thank you so much for making my daughter’s birthday so special.
I had a very unfortunate and unexpected experience at the Barkley Bellingham location today. When I walked up to order from the Chinese food counter, a male employee stood in the back staring at me for about 30 seconds before saying, "Are you just standing there, or are you going to get something?" I was immediately taken aback by the comment.
As someone who works in customer service, I always try to approach others with kindness and respect. I politely responded that we were looking to order a bowl. The employee then asked, "A meal or a bowl?" I explained that I would like noodles and chicken, which is how I typically order at the Ferndale location without any confusion. He responded in a rude tone, saying, "So a meal," while abruptly grabbing a different container.
I apologized and explained that I usually refer to it as a bowl at the Ferndale location. Before I could finish, he interrupted me and insisted that it wasn't a bowl and that it was a meal. At that point, I was honestly so surprised by the way I was being spoken to that I barely registered the rest of what he said.
I understand that everyone has difficult days, and perhaps that was the case here. However, as someone who also works in customer service, I would never speak to a customer in that manner, regardless of the circumstances. This is the first time I've felt compelled to leave a review like this, but the interaction was unprofessional and left me feeling unwelcome. I sincerely hope this feedback is taken as an opportunity to improve the customer experience, because no customer should feel uncomfortable simply trying to place an order.

Great day to shop it's customer appreciation day, you get a bag of various items single items like drinks, small packages of chips along with a reusable bag. Along with coupons. Then a spin wheel for even nicer items . We didn't get the right number.
One local guide rated this Haggens 1/5 because they sell cinnamon with frosting and some without. Another "local guide," rated Haggens 1/5 for an onion being too large which they said is a biohazard. Finally a third asked why a croissant is open in the middle rated 1/5 - really tells you how privileged people are around here to low rate a business over frosting preferences. Anyways - I came here to find the GMs email since they haven't been pairing queso sauce with the hot philycheese steaks in over a month & I need the recipe if they have discontinued it. I would love to see the sauces continued with the sandwiches it was my favorite.
Otherwise this Haggens is amazing, and the deli lady who packages the cold sandwiches is a Rockstar.
