I’ve been shopping at this Safeway for about six years, and somehow the experience just keeps getting worse.
First, there’s an older employee with a ponytail who has apparently worked here for 20+ years. He is easily one of the most awkward and unpleasant employees I’ve encountered. When he’s overseeing self-checkout, he just stares at customers with an uncomfortable, irritated expression. I understand that employees have to monitor the self-checkout area, but there’s a difference between doing your job and making customers feel like suspects. Ask him for help and he acts annoyed, then walks away mumbling under his breath. If dealing with customers bothers him that much, maybe customer-facing work isn’t the best place for him.
I also completely agree with the other reviews complaining about the produce. It’s incredibly hit or miss—and mostly miss. Half the time it looks like Safeway is getting whatever produce nobody else wanted. It reminds me of a jail cafeteria getting leftover produce and serving it to the inmates. Except apparently we’re the inmates and Safeway is the jail. Even when the produce looks acceptable at the store, it consistently seems to go bad unusually fast after bringing it home.
Then there’s checkout. They rarely seem to have an actual cashier ringing up groceries. About 90% of the time I come here, self-checkout is basically the only option. That’s fine when you’re buying three things. It’s incredibly inconvenient when you have an entire cart of groceries. If Safeway wants customers to scan and bag their own groceries every visit, maybe they should start putting us on the payroll.
After six years of shopping here, I’ve watched this location steadily decline instead of improve. The South Lakes Safeway is significantly better, and I’d rather make the trip there.
Do yourself a favor and shop somewhere else.
And Safeway, you can spare me the canned response underneath this review telling me to visit your “Contact Us” page. Instead of another copy-and-paste customer service apology, maybe take the complaints people keep leaving here and actually fix the store.

This place gets an overly bad rap due to its location, but I've always found it convenient and pleasant!

Complain about the customer service.
I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding the unacceptable customer service my family and I experienced at the Safeway store located at Hunter Woods Plaza in Reston, Virginia.
My family and I are regular customers at this store. During our recent visit, my daughter wanted to buy a drink from the Starbucks inside Safeway. We saw that the Starbucks area appeared to be open, but no one was at the counter. I asked an employee who was walking near the front registers whether Starbucks was open. She told me that it was closed.
About five minutes later, after buying chips for my other children, we noticed Starbucks was serving customers. I asked the Starbucks employee if they were open, and she replied, “Yes.”
The employee who had previously told us Starbucks was closed was standing nearby. I politely asked why she had told us it was closed when it was actually open. Instead of apologizing or explaining the misunderstanding, she laughed at my family and me and walked away. We felt embarrassed and disrespected.
I then asked to speak with the store manager, Harrison. Unfortunately, rather than listening to our concerns or trying to resolve the situation, Harrison appeared to support the employee, and I did not feel that my complaint was taken seriously.
I am not complaining because of a simple mistake. Everyone can make mistakes. I am complaining because of the rude behavior, the lack of an apology, and the way my family’s concerns were dismissed.
We have been loyal Safeway customers for a long time, but experiences like this make us question whether we should continue shopping at this store. I respectfully ask that this incident be reviewed by Safeway’s district or corporate management and that appropriate action be taken to improve customer service.
Thank you for your time and attention. I hope to receive a response regarding this matter.

A fine store in my opinion! It's Safeway so it's not going to be anything immaculate, but it's nice to have and conveniently located.

Solid Safeway, very similar to other layouts with a good variety comparable with Food Lion or a smaller Wegmans. Clean and had carts available indoors. Good variety and clarity of deals/clearances. Best to go on Fridays and/or check out weekly deals. Also has a Starbucks inside.
