I’ve shopped at Giant Food for most of my life. My parents shopped here before me, and they still do. After decades of loyalty, it’s hard to understand how the checkout experience has become so frustrating and customer-unfriendly. The self-checkout system is, without question, one of the worst I’ve encountered. The machines are so absurdly sensitive that they seem to assume every paying customer is trying to steal something. Constant warnings to “place the item in the bagging area,” followed immediately by more alarms, interruptions, and requests for employee assistance, make an ordinary grocery trip feel like an interrogation instead of a purchase. To make matters worse, after finally paying, the machine repeatedly barks at customers to “take your items,” as though standing there for three extra seconds is somehow unacceptable. It’s loud, repetitive, and completely unnecessary. Here’s the bigger issue: customers are paying premium grocery prices while simultaneously being asked to do the cashier’s job. If Giant wants customers to scan, bag, and process their own orders, the experience should at least be efficient and respectful. Instead, it feels like the company has invested in technology that treats honest, long-time customers like potential criminals. I’ve remained loyal to Giant because it’s been part of my community for decades. Unfortunately, loyalty doesn’t seem to be valued anymore. Every trip ends with unnecessary frustration over machines that create problems where none exist. There are plenty of grocery stores competing for customers today. If Giant continues to prioritize loss-prevention technology over customer experience, it shouldn’t be surprised when long-time shoppers decide they’ve had enough and take their business elsewhere. For a company that has served this community for generations, that’s a disappointing direction to take. I have a deep seated hatred for Giant for the self-check out experience after spending a ridiculous amount of money for a pathetically limited selection of groceries.

I don't know if it is intentional or not, but this store seems to want customer service to be so bad as to make the self check out appear palatable. (See the myriad other reviews for more info on the self check out nightmare) The last several time we have been here it has gotten progressively worse. Check out has degraded to experiences such as the delightful teen obviously under the influence of one or more chemical substances to the always thrilling outright hostile and lazy woman who cannot speak English well enough for me to understand that she won't bag the groceries because they are too heavy. I only go here now if im pressed for time. Otherwise, I'll drive farther to deal with less nonsense.

I've shopped almost exclusively at Giant for the last 2 years and regularly use pickup because it's convenient, even though the process here is often disorganized. Tonight was by far the worst experience I've had. I scheduled pickup for 7–8pm and never received a notification that my order was ready. Around 8:15pm, I called the store after struggling to get connected to the right department, only to be told my order wouldn't be ready until 9:30–10pm. Since I was already at the store, I asked them to cancel the order so I could shop myself instead, and they said they would. After grocery shopping on my own and getting home around 9pm, I suddenly received a text saying my pickup order was ready. I called again and was told I needed to cancel it in the app, but the order had already disappeared because it was past the scheduled pickup window. The employee then told me he would "try" to cancel it, despite the fact that I'd already been charged nearly $100. The most upsetting part was that after the call, the employee never properly hung up the phone, and I could hear him mocking me to another worker, who told him not to bother cancelling the order. Delays happen, but poor communication, mishandling a cancellation, and mocking customers is unacceptable.
