I honestly don’t understand what’s going on with this Safeway now. Customers are being treated like criminals even when they’ve paid for their groceries and have a receipt.
It’s not paying customers’ fault that the store has had issues with shoplifting. Maybe better management or having enough employees on hand would be a better solution than treating everyone who walks through the door like a suspect.
You need to get this under control before more customers decide to take their business somewhere else. People shouldn’t be made to feel uncomfortable or suspicious simply because they chose your store to buy their groceries. Treat your paying customers with some respect.

I bought some groceries and noticed there was a pokemon vending machine nearby the checkout.
Being that my kid enjoys pokemon I thought it would be nice to get him one. After waiting for 4 minutes total I was told my a Safeway employee that I had to leave immediately. this is completely unnecessary and unacceptable behavior from the Safeway employees. I understand there may be a loitering issue, but to be treated like this when I was not even loitering nor do I typically visit this Safeway is completely unacceptable. I hope that someone higher up sees this and corrects this poor behavior. I did absolutely nothing wrong and come to Safeways very often to shop. After this experience I may just take my shopping elsewhere

I used to enjoy going to this grocery store, but since they have installed the new security exit gate, it has been more of a nuisance than anything else. People are trapped because they can't get out in time when trying to scan the barcode. I've watched older people struggle to get out before the door shuts. I've seen four people waiting in line to exit. There's got to be a better way.

Terrible new system. First, if you visit the pharmacy or simply don’t find what you need, you’re unable to exit the store normally, which is completely ridiculous.
The only way out is through the self-checkout area. So, after visiting the pharmacy, I was forced to stand in a line of people backed up at the self-checkouts simply because that was the only way to get out of the store.
Then, to make matters worse, there were three employees standing on the other side of the exit, watching the entire line build up, instead of recognizing that the system was clearly flawed and simply opening the door. Instead, they just stood there repeatedly telling customers, “Scan your receipt.”
While standing in this ridiculous line, I watched elderly customers struggle with their groceries while waiting for the people ahead of them to scan their receipts just so the door would open. This is completely unnecessary and unacceptable.
And what happens during an emergency or fire? This system does not appear to provide an adequate or reasonable means of quickly exiting the store. Customers should not have to scan a receipt at a machine just to get through an exit. I would strongly encourage management to have this system reviewed for emergency and fire safety. I would be very interested to hear what the Fairfax County Fire Marshal would have to say about this setup.
This is not an improvement. It is an unnecessarily frustrating, poorly designed system that creates congestion at the exit and could potentially create serious problems during an emergency.

The recent renovations include loss prevention strategies that make this feel like a prison.
There are gates you have to pass through to get in which close behind you. There is no way to get out without either:
A. scanning a receipt in self-checkout
B. going through a staffed checkout lane which is also now gated
C. trying to get through the gates at the entrance which will alarm 🚨.
Looked for something they didn't have? Well, you're stuck in here now.
If you want to feel respected and trusted do yourself a favor and shop somewhere else. I used to come here multiple times a week for random items. I'll be going to the nearby Giant down US-50 from now on.
