I just had the best burger I've eaten since we moved here 3 years ago. Dang. The fried Brussels sprouts were excellent as well, in a wonderful sherry vinegar and garlic sauce. The place is pretty cool (the building is from 1820); my only mild complaint is that it was a bit warm inside on a hot day. But that wasn't a big deal, especially compared to the food and service. We'll be back.

We went tonight for restaurant week. We chose Tavern and Grocery after reviewing all the other restaurant menus because of the halibut. It was the $45 menu. We drove an hour to get their and after being seated and reviewing the menu the fish selection was cod . I questioned the waitress and told her that Halibut was on their website and in the paper . She pretended to not know what I was talking about . The cod was undercooked and wet . We sent it back and the chef /owner bought it back to us . She told us then that she couldn't get Halibut and substituted cod. I told her it was still on her website and was never changed . She did not care at all and walked away. This was totally inconsiderate and very poor business ethics. You list a specific menu for one week , but then false advertise what you are serving . I will never go back

We came here for our anniversary dinner. We had been for lunch previously and enjoyed that experience. The appetizers were delicious. We ordered fries and brussel sprouts as our appetizers and they were the best part of our meal. The main entree was a major disappointment. I wanted to try the duck but since I’m celiac they suggested I put it over sautéed kale. It was the tiniest bit of duck and did not even taste that good. My husband ordered his steak medium rare and as you can see in photos it was medium well. What is so upsetting is they cut the meat before plating so they could see it was not cooked correctly but it was still sent to our table. They offered to redo it but we didn’t want to sit and wait any longer. Service was pretty slow, especially since the restaurant was pretty empty when we first got there. Overall a disappointing experience. We love farm to table restaurants because we always experience a certain level of quality but not this time. We would try it again for lunch but will not recommend or be back for dinner.

Review is based on two visits. The 1st one we only had cocktails at the upstairs bar. 2nd visit we ate dinner, as well as cocktails. Service is very good and the decor is charming. Again, great cocktails made by skilled bartenders. Dinner service was a bit slow because it was a busy holiday weekend Saturday night. I enjoyed the steak frittes. Meat was cooked perfectly and the fries were plentiful and delicious. Friends were stealing them from my plate. Wr really enjoyed ourselves both times and will likely be back when are visiting Charlottesville next. The downstairs speakeasy style bar was packed. We peeked down there on our way out, looked like folks were having a great time.
