- JFJonathan FoulkAug 21, 20262.0I only ended up at Five Guys because it was next door to my hotel and I needed food fast. The last time I ate at Five Guys was probably five years ago, and about three bites into this meal my brain went, “Ohhhh. Right. This is why we stopped coming here.” The burger was fine. And by “fine,” I mean perfectly edible, completely forgettable, and priced like someone back there personally raised the cow. Then there are the free peanuts. Five Guys really leans into those peanuts like they’re providing a luxury amenity. Keep them. Seriously. Sell the peanuts, auction off the peanut boxes, do whatever you need to do and take a few dollars off the burger. I did not come here for complimentary legumes. Service wasn’t exactly overflowing with hospitality either. I walked in and didn’t get so much as a hello. Not a “welcome,” not a “how are you,” barely an acknowledgment that another human being had entered the building. I’ve gotten warmer greetings from airport TSA. Now, I will give Five Guys credit where it’s due: the Coca-Cola Freestyle machine was fantastic. Easily the highlight of the meal. Hundreds of drink combinations, modern technology, excitement, choices. Basically everything the burger experience was missing. At one point I realized I was having more fun choosing my Diet Coke flavor than eating my dinner. And can we talk about the decorations? The walls and cups are covered with “Best Burger,” “Best Taste,” and glowing reviews from what appears to be the George W. Bush administration. Some of these awards look old enough to qualify for a throwback Thursday. If your restaurant is still bragging about reviews from the 2000s, maybe it’s time to call the local newspaper and see if they’re available for a rematch. The whole brand just feels stuck in time. Same peanuts. Same brown bags. Same old reviews on the walls. Except somehow the prices have successfully made it all the way to 2026. For what I paid, I expected a burger that would make me understand the hype. Instead, I left thinking I could have gone to McDonald’s, spent less, gotten friendlier service, and probably enjoyed the food more. Five Guys: come for the burger, stay because you’re still at the Coca-Cola Freestyle machine trying every flavor combination to get your money’s worth.
