  My pudding cost just got a whole lot cheaper now that it’s in Utah!!! . 😂 I have tried an assortment of desserts from Magnolia Bakery and it’s more than just a banana pudding bakery… it’s cupcakes, cheesecakes, cookies, muffins, coffee, dirty sodas, and so much more. It’s the one stop bakery shop and now my go to for any dessert! Glad you found your home in Utah!

  Ever since the early 2000s when cupcakes and the Magnolia bakery (see the SNL digital short Lazy Sunday!) became a thing, I had always wanted to try them but hadn't gotten to NYC. When they opened recently, family members and I were very happy to hear that and to go and try it. Tried a bunch of things, here's the verdict from our/my end. The chocolate cake and cupcakes are made out of the same dough and frosting - excellent *****! Banana pudding great - ****! Brownie and blondie - meh, ***. The vanilla cake was disappointing, dry and really didn't have much flavor at all. Just tasted like sugar. I've had better vanilla cake elsewhere. The people who work there do a great job! As one person wrote, maybe it's not what used to be in NYC back in the old days, but I wouldn't know, so I just have to judge based on what it is now.

  I was so excited to see a Magnolia open around here. I used to go to their shops all the time back when I lived in NY, and it’s been nearly ten years since I last had anything from them. Sadly, whatever made the original spots special just isn't there anymore. The recipes clearly aren't the same. The banana pudding used to be rich and thick with soft, cakey wafers. This version just tasted like a cup of whipped cream with dry cookies sitting in it. The cupcakes were even more disappointing. The original Magnolia cupcakes had that dense, sturdy, old-school butter cake crumb that held up against the heavy frosting. What I got was a generic, fluffy sponge you could find at any supermarket. It honestly feels like the brand got bought out by private equity and immediately cut corners on ingredients and recipes to churn out volume over quality. On the service side, the cashier at the counter was super nice and welcoming. But the vibe was ruined by another employee who literally dragged every single chair across the floor with this unbearable screeching noise while tidying up. Definitely not what you want to hear while in a bakery, and some basic staff retraining is overdue. Disappointing to see another classic spot lose its touch as it expands. Hopefully they have a plan to go back to the original recipe. Otherwise, I am not making another visit when I can find comparable alternatives at supermarkets.
