I didn't feel comfortable or welcomed in this HEB, I will not go back, people are rude.
Gosh, I am extremely impressed with the mannerism & professional attitude of the HEB Manager, Shawn. There was some confusion while I was trying to check out. And without any hesitation, he immediately took control of the situation. He had the items returned & personally checked me out, while applying "all" my discounts. He maintained his huge smile, apologized for any inconvenience, and ensured I left completely satisfied! Thank you for having such an awesome team of employees & caring managers!
I had a mixed experience at the H-E-B on Kitty Hawk Rd. in Universal City.
The cashier, Maximo, was excellent — friendly, efficient, and got me through quickly. He even slowed down a bit when the bagger was pulled away so things didn’t fall apart completely. Genuine shout-out to Maximo.
What bothered me was watching the only bagger at my register get pulled aside mid-transaction by a manager over his hat. The hat was a plain, solid-color cap (white with a purple brim) with no logos, no team branding, nothing. From what I overheard, the bagger has a high “southside fade,” had recently gotten a bad sunburn on his scalp from working outside in this San Antonio heat without a hat, and is leaving the company soon. He explained he’d specifically chosen a blank, non-branded hat so it wouldn’t be an issue and didn’t want to spend money on an H-E-B branded one he’d only wear once or twice. The manager still made him take it off.
While that conversation happened, no one was bagging my groceries and some of my items got crushed. It felt like a uniform technicality was put ahead of finishing the customer’s order. I understand dress codes exist, but this kid had already tried to solve the problem in a reasonable way, and pulling the only bagger away from an active register created a real service problem for no good reason.
Maximo handled the situation as well as he could. I just felt bad for the bagger, he was trying to protect his scalp and not waste money on a hat he barely needed, and it still became a disruption.

I had an extremely frustrating experience trying to return two unused boxes of hair dye at the HEB on Kitty Hawk.
I first went in on 8/3 to return the items. I didn’t have my paper receipt, but in the past HEB has been able to locate purchases using the card or digital wallet used for payment. The employee tried multiple payment methods, including my digital wallet, but said they couldn’t locate the purchase. I had bought the items exactly seven days earlier, so I went home and confirmed through my banking app that I had in fact paid with my digital wallet on 7/27.
The next day, during my lunch break, I returned with a screenshot showing the transaction. Before even looking into it, I was immediately told there was nothing they could do because it had been over 24 hours and they couldn’t locate the receipt. I was told to drive to the HEB where I originally purchased the items in La Vernia.
At that point, I asked what that would accomplish. If HEB’s system supposedly can’t locate a receipt after 24 hours, and if they couldn’t find it using my payment method or even my HEB account where the coupon was used, why would driving to another store make any difference? It felt like no one was actually trying to solve the problem.
I was then told to call “corporate” to have the receipt emailed to me. Unfortunately, the employee handed me HEB’s HR phone number instead. So, thanks for that—I accidentally called Human Resources before I ever reached Corporate. It at least made it easier to file a complaint about the experience. After that mix-up was pointed out, I was finally given the correct number. Within just a few minutes, Corporate located my purchase and emailed me my receipt with the store number and transaction information.
I returned to customer service with the receipt email. Another employee looked at it and initially said she couldn’t help because there wasn’t a barcode. She then called someone named Juan, who appeared to be a lead or manager. If it weren’t for the button-down shirt, I would have assumed I was speaking with someone who had very little customer service experience. I’ve had better customer service from brand-new employees.
He verified the receipt but then questioned where I bought the items and how long ago. When I told him they were purchased in La Vernia on 7/27, he initially said the return had to be processed at that store so “their numbers would be correct.”
That made no sense to me. HEB is one company, and customers shouldn’t have to drive to another city to return an unused item simply because it was purchased at a different location. I even pointed out that if I had bought it three hours away while traveling, would I really be expected to drive all the way back just to make a return?
Only after that conversation did he say, “I guess we’ll accept it this time,” as if he were doing me a favor, even though I had already proven the purchase with a receipt that Corporate provided. I eventually received my refund on a gift card, but only after making two trips to the store, spending my lunch break dealing with the issue, being given the wrong phone number, and receiving conflicting information from multiple employees.
This entire situation could have been avoided if employees were properly trained on HEB’s policies and knew how to direct customers. Ironically, Corporate found my receipt in minutes, while the store insisted it couldn’t be found. The inconsistency, lack of knowledge, and unnecessary runaround made what should have been a simple return into an extremely disappointing customer experience.
I expect much better customer service from HEB.

Not having any sackers at 730pm on a weekday when the store is packed is pretty crazy considering HEB is one of the most profitable private companies in the US. That aside, having the exit the right of the registers barricaded so you have to left, and I do mean barricaded with carts and racks, has to be a massive hazard. If a fire or active shooter happened you're forcing everyone out in one door. I reported this to the Fire Marshall as I'm sure this isn't allowed.
