I had a really frustrating and honestly disappointing experience at this HEB location that I feel needs to be addressed.
I recently went in to do some basic shopping after being laid up for nearly two months due to a serious leg injury—ruptured ACL, bucket handle meniscus tear, tibial plateau fracture, and a broken fibula. I’m currently awaiting surgery. I do have my own mobility device, but it doesn’t have a basket, so my plan was simple: use my crutch to get inside, grab one of the store’s mobility carts, pick up my prescriptions, a few items, and head out.
Everything inside the store was fine. I picked up what I needed, checked out, and asked an employee in the self-checkout area (I believe her name was Tony) if it was okay to take the mobility cart out to my vehicle. She told me yes—people do it all the time.
I didn’t park in handicap parking because I don’t currently have a placard and haven’t needed one before this injury. As I headed toward my truck, just past the handicap spaces, the cart suddenly started beeping and then stopped working completely. It would only reverse, not move forward. I assumed maybe I’d gone slightly out of range, so I adjusted and tried again—same thing. The cart would not function beyond a certain point in the parking lot.
At that point, I had the option to struggle back to my vehicle on crutches carrying my items, but instead I chose to return to the store because I genuinely thought this might be something staff should be aware of.
When I explained the situation, Tony called over a manager named Omar. From the moment he joined the conversation, his tone was dismissive and condescending. Instead of addressing the issue with the cart, he immediately focused on the fact that I don’t have a handicap placard and insinuated that this entire situation was my fault because I could just get a temporary one.
That response completely missed the point. Whether or not I have a placard has nothing to do with whether the store’s mobility carts function in the parking lot or whether customers with temporary or invisible conditions should be able to use them.
To demonstrate the issue, I invited him outside to see it firsthand. I even recorded the interaction with my META glasses. As soon as we passed the handicap spaces, the cart began beeping again and stopped—exactly as I described.
At that point, Omar immediately and confidently stated that it was a weight issue. For context, I weigh about 170 pounds, and the only item of any weight in the cart was a case of beer. If that exceeds the cart’s capacity, that’s a serious equipment problem—not a customer issue. He then suggested it might be due to a slight incline, which also made no sense given the situation.
Ultimately, he had to push the cart all the way to my truck himself.
There are two major problems here. First, the carts are clearly restricted in a way that makes them unusable for customers who are not parked directly in handicap spaces. That ignores the reality that many people with legitimate mobility issues do not have placards—especially those dealing with temporary injuries like mine.
Second, the way this situation was handled was unacceptable. Omar’s attitude, his assumptions, and especially the comment implying this was a “weight issue” were inappropriate and unprofessional.
I haven’t returned to shop at this location since and have been shopping at Randalls with absolutely zero issues and treated with a great deal of respect. I’ve only used the pharmacy drive-thru, and I’m seriously considering moving my prescriptions elsewhere. This experience made it clear that accessibility—and basic customer respect—are not being handled the way they should be. If Omar spoke to me, a customer, this dismissively and rude, I shudder to that about those women working under him.

I wanted to write a quick review and hopefully this gets to someone who can share this with this team member. I wanted to give a shoutout to Ismael in the butcher section. Everytime I come here he is always so polite, friendly, and takes the time to answer questions that patrons have. Today he went above and beyond for us when he truly didn’t have to. As someone who grew up on HEB, and this will always be where I shop, this location should be proud to have a team member representing HEB like Ismael.
