I have rarely ever given a restaurant a one-star rating, but unfortunately Portillo's is a recipient. Therefore you are entitled to a detailed explanation.
We visited Portillo's in Katy for the first time (despite the fact it's been open for over a year)for evening takeout.
You've always heard location, location, location, but obviously the strategist with Portillo's didn't look ahead when they built this restaurant.
The restaurant is off the Katy freeway feeder Road near Westside Parkway and surrounded by fields. There are not plans in the making for office buildings or even close residential areas that would cause this restaurant to be heavily patronized. But that's the least of their problems. If you have a crappy location, but your food is awesome, people will find you.
So let me back-up. I couldn't get their phone-app to check-out after making my food selection. I called the restaurant and they suggested I just come to the drive-thru when I attempted to place a call-in order. So off to the drive-thru we go!
We arrive and they have a very large parking lot, but I believe there were about 8 cars in the parking lot.(5+ were probably employees)There were double drive-thru lines(as if they thought they were Whataburger or In-and-Out?)and we were the second of TWO cars. I guess they OVER-built with high expectations? Hmph, nevermind the fact this isn't Chicago and those of us in the Houston area have never heard of Portillo's!
Being in the Houston/Katy area, the name "Portillo's" typically is pronounced with a Spanish pronunciation of (por-TEE-yohs) lending it to sound like the name of a Mexican restaurant. The restaurant has been there for a year and my wife and I have never visited as we already have our favorite three Mexican restaurants and are loyal to them. We did not learn until visiting their website that the name Portillo is named after a Chicago man, Dick Portillo, pronounced (por-TILL-ohs). One would have thought their marketing department might have thought of this before introducing this restaurant to the Houston area where we have a very large Hispanic/Latin/Mexican population and you just learn to pronounce sight-words a certain way.
NOW (Finally!😜) the part that caused a 1-star rating . . . THE FOOD.
We got home and unpackaged the food. The burgers were heavily burnt around the edges, and over-cooked in general. Burn a burger and that is all you taste!
The patties themselves were very sloppily made, and the toppings were thrown haphazardly off to one side of the burger. Another burger had, "four pickles" stacked neatly on top of each other in the very center of the patty. Weird at best, thoughtless at worst. (Can we say training??).
The french-fries were nothing spectacular that one couldn't get from a frozen bag of Ore-Ida, and mostly over-cooked and uneventful.
We ordered LARGE drinks and received cups the size of Wataburger's small size cups! (20oz) Wow, does this Chicago-based company do ANY research on their largest competitor in the Houston market?(Wataburger)
Even if an employee screwed-up and gave us their "Regular" 20 oz drink instead of a "Large", it is only 32 oz's, Whataburgers large is 44oz's, WELCOME TO TEXAS!🤠
The only highlight for their food that night were two slice's of chocolate and one slice of lemon cake. They were good, but not spectacular.
To add insult to injury, they charged 13.00 for a crappy burger, fries and a drink! So a lot of extra money for a substandard product. $55 with 3 slices of cake.
In closing, if you're looking for a good to great burger at a decent price, go to Whataburger, Joy Love Burger, even In- and-Out. Your taste buds and your wallet will thank you!
To the Portillo Senior Management, your restaurants in Houston will be a failure if you don't drastically improve the quality, increase the drink sizes and decrease the price-point. Also, some better marketing so the Houston area customer does not think you are another Mexican restaurant. You may be a "Chicago Icon," but in Texas, we have never heard of you!🤠 Sorry, but that's the truth!
