I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was disappointing enough that I feel others should be aware.
On Tuesday, I called the bakery to ask about ordering a simple sheet cake and cupcakes for my husband's 70th birthday on Sunday. I was told there would be no problem completing the order in time.
Because I live in another town and work in Fort Worth, I asked if I could simply email or text a photo of the cake design. I've done this with several bakeries over the years, and it's never been an issue. I was told that was not an option and that I would need to come to the store and show them the picture in person so they could determine whether they could make it.
I explained that I had very limited free time and that I was trying to keep the birthday a surprise, making it difficult to come into the store. Despite that, I was still told I had to come in.
The next day, I used my one-hour lunch break to drive from Fort Worth, fighting I-20 traffic, just to place the order. After arriving, I had to wait for assistance because no one was available at the bakery counter.
When someone finally helped me, she looked at the photo on my phone and then informed me that they required a printed copy of the picture. This was the first time anyone had mentioned that requirement. Had I been told this during my phone call the day before, I would have come prepared or made other arrangements. It was a chocolate sheet cake with some writing on it, not an over the top order.
I explained that I had driven a considerable distance during my lunch break and asked if there was any alternative, such as emailing the image or allowing them to take a picture from my phone. I was told no.
At that point, as I'm getting into my car, I contacted the store and asked to speak with a manager. The front-end manager was courteous and attempted to help by transferring me to someone above him who might be able to provide an email address. Unfortunately, I reached a voicemail that disconnected before I could leave a message. When I called back, he paged that person, but no one responded. On my third call, I was told they were in a meeting and would return my call afterward.
Unfortunately, I couldn't wait indefinitely. I was trying to accomplish this during my lunch break, and time was something I simply didn't have.
Ironically, after I had already ordered my cake from another bakery, someone from the H-E-B bakery finally returned my call and left me an email address where I could send the picture.
That is what makes this experience so frustrating. The solution I had asked for from the very beginning—simply emailing the photo—was apparently available all along. Had that information been provided during my initial phone call, or even when I arrived at the bakery, none of this inconvenience would have happened.
This review isn't about whether the bakery could or couldn't make the cake. If they had looked at the design and said it wasn't possible, I would have completely understood. My frustration is with the inconsistent communication, the unnecessary trip, and the lack of accurate information from the beginning.
If requiring a printed photo is truly store policy, customers should be informed of that requirement when they call. Better yet, if an email option exists, it should be offered before asking someone to drive across town.
The other bakery I contacted accepted my emailed picture immediately, confirmed they could make the cake, and had my order completed in just a few minutes.
While I know one cake and a dozen cupcakes order won't impact H-E-B's business, I hope this feedback encourages better communication so future customers don't experience the same frustration I did.
