Amazing time, live music, great high quality food and beautiful ambiance. Complimentary valet on Sunday was a major plus - thank you for accommodating our birthday brunch!
They also have a small room for private dining and an upstairs so we will be back to check out those spaces.
At Zaranda, the experience goes far beyond the menu, especially when you’re sitting in front of Carlos, better known as Chino.
Instead of ordering off a menu, we let Chino take full creative control. What followed was a continuous flow of experimental cocktails, each one showcasing his passion, skill, and willingness to push boundaries. He didn’t just make drinks; he told a story through them.
The standout of the night was a cocktail he introduced as “Garden of the Pit.” Visually, it was bold and unforgettable, darkened with charcoal and crowned with a smooth layer of egg white foam. It had that dramatic, almost mysterious look that makes you pause before the first sip.
But the flavor was where it really came to life. Despite its intense appearance, the drink was incredibly balanced—silky, layered, and refined. The charcoal added depth without overwhelming the drink, while the egg white gave it a velvety texture that tied everything together beautifully.
What makes Chino exceptional is his intentionality. Every drink felt like an exploration, like he was experimenting in real time and letting us be part of the process. There’s a level of confidence and creativity there that you don’t come across often.
But what truly set the night apart came at the end.
Zaranda doesn’t even offer gluten-free desserts, but without us asking, Chino went out of his way and sent his assistant to bring back a gluten-free dessert from Xochil. Completely unexpected. That level of attention and care is rare. It wasn’t just about drinks anymore; it was about creating a full experience tailored to us.
That moment said everything about who Chino is. He’s not just mixing cocktails; he’s paying attention, anticipating, and going above and beyond to make sure you leave impressed.
If you’re at Zaranda, don’t overthink it. Sit at the bar, trust Chino, and let him take over. You’ll get more than drinks; you’ll get an experience.
Absolutely one of the best dining experiences in Houston. Food was amazing with healthy portions, service was spot on. Highlight was the Arroces (think paella) which was huge (but we managed to get through it!) and one of the best I have ever had…. A unique twist with the soft shell oysters (they make the “shell”) and the trout crude being presented as a “whole” fish (don’t worry - no bones!). Great drinks list including the very humble “Greatest Margarita of all time” - which was very good! Will be back!
We ordered the pescado, the arroces vegetables, and the zanahorrias, and everything was delicious. We especially loved the taco de pato, a fusion take on Peking duck! All the menus items at Zarandas are very unique and creative, the attention to detail is very impressive, and the service is phenomenal. Our waiter was so friendly and offered so many helpful recommendations. We will definitely be back with friends and family in the future!

Zaranda should be a must-visit for anyone looking to experience something truly special in Houston.
Inspired by Las Californias, Chef Hugo Ortega and his team deliver a cuisine without borders that feels both rooted and refined. From the moment you sit down, there is a clear sense of intention behind every detail.
We explored the menu guided by the team, and while everything was memorable, the arroz with confit duck and pressed rabbit is the dish that stays with you. Deep, rich, and beautifully layered, with a balance that speaks to real technique and understanding.
Desserts were exceptional, as expected, and closed the experience on a high note.
Service and atmosphere elevate the experience even further, creating a night that feels complete from start to finish.
Zaranda is not just a great meal, it is an experience we will gladly return to.
