Family of 5 ate dinner on Saturday night around 6:30 PM. Ordered a plate meal, cheeseburger, kid’s Mac, kid’s pulled pork, fried catfish sandwich and beef ribs. The food is fine. It isn’t overly good or bad. This isn’t a place I would recommend as a “must try barbecue” place. The real issue here is the experience.
The barbecue items are ordered and served cafeteria style, so you take the food away with you from the counter to your seat. The burgers and fried catfish are made to order. You have to order at a different place than the barbecue items, which isn’t clearly explained. It’s also not clearly explained that the burger and sandwiches are MTO, which is a great feature, but if your party is not all ordering the same kind of meal, the half that ordered barbecue is already done when the half who got sandwiches gets their food. No signs or staff members explained this. The food we ordered MTO didn’t come with any of the extra pieces that we ordered such as ranch or coleslaw on the side (pickles or onions) which generally all come on the sandwich and we asked for them on the side. Some of the younger staff members working the order line and register behave as if they really do not care about the experience of the customer, which is uncharacteristic of a Pappa’s establishment. For example, they had to call the name of a customer several times and they seemed annoyed instead of leaving the counter to find the customer or taking any additional steps. Again, to me, this kind of bare minimum behavior doesn’t align with the Pappa’s brand.
We recently ate at a Pappa’s Burger location, which I understand is a different concept, but is a similar kind of price point and the experience there was significantly better there. I wouldn’t come back here again, except to get some French fries, which are my favorite fries I’ve ever had - think Five Guys, but better.

Pappas has very, very good barbecue, tasty red beans, salads and dirty rice, and quite a few other sides. It's good place to go with family or friends.

Pappas Bar-B-Q was absolutely packed after the Uzbekistan vs. Portugal World Cup match, which made for a fun and energetic atmosphere. The ambiance was great, and it was cool seeing fans from both countries celebrating and talking football. The brisket and the rest of the BBQ were okay, but nothing that really stood out, especially for Texas. Overall, it’s a decent place to grab a bite, but with so many outstanding BBQ spots in Houston, I expected a bit more from the food.
