For our most recent date night, we decided to step outside our usual routine of Saltgrass and Longhorn for something a bit more refined. McCormick & Schmick’s (Downtown Houston) delivered exactly the 'different' experience we were looking for. They offer convenient valet for $13, or you can use the nearby parking garage for $10, which is just a short 2–3 minute walk to the entrance.
The atmosphere is perfect for a romantic evening—warm, dim lighting with the choice of intimate booths or tables. The service was impeccable; Raven, our waitress, was excellent and made sure we never felt rushed. We were greeted immediately with ice water and fresh bread.
For an appetizer, we had the R.C. Ranch Wagyu Carpaccio. It was exquisite—the black garlic nori crust and truffle aioli created a sophisticated, melt-in-your-mouth flavor profile that left us wanting more. For our mains, the Cedar Roasted Salmon with yuzu avocado mousse was a masterclass in balanced flavors, and the Steak & Shrimp with Cajun sauce was perfectly seasoned and tender.
We finished the night by sharing both the Strawberry Shortcake and the Strawberry Brown Butter Cake. The brown butter cake with vanilla ice cream was the perfect indulgent end to the night. We will definitely be back!!
Do not look at the price when you come to this place. The $ is worth it. (150 for two-without tip)
After our meal, I received an email with a link from corporate asking how was our meal. After waiting over 2 weeks for them to respond, management remains silent. Therefore, I have no choice but to write this review.
The dinner was to celebrate my mother's 90th birthday. It started off very well. I called and spoke with Richard (manager)in advance, and he set us up with a very nice table.
After being seated, our waiter who was training someone greeted us with congested eyes, a mucous filled cough, and a stuffy nose. Midway through the meal, he began wearing black latex gloves due to what appeared to be an illness.
Our drinks came out fine, yet the following are points of what was wrong with the experience:
1. The waiter added without our knowledge or consent an additional fee to the artichoke dip. I asked the waiter why an extra charge is added to the dip, and he told me, "I always add the crab to all my artichoke dip orders."
2. Everyone's meal, except for the birthday lady, came out room temperature. My steak was not warm. The broccolini was cool when tasted. There was no sizzle, no warm plate, no heat coming from my steak. Who in the hell eats or wants a luke warm steak?
3. My daughter ordered the pork chop which "comes with" sides of mashed potatoes and vegetables. Neither of those sides came out with the meal. We advised the waiter, he acknowledged the error, apologized, and he said he would correct it. It took so long for those sides to come that my daughter finished her pork chop before the sides arrived. Then, he had the nerve to charge us for those sides that were included with the entree. We discussed that issue too.
4. We brought a cake with us to celebrate, and the waiter upon greeting us held it somewhere in the restaurant. After the meal, when he brought the cake to the table, the chocolate on top had completely melted. What heat source caused that to melt? Where was the cake kept during dinner?
5. Additionally on the cake topic, after the waiter placed it on the table, he just walked away. No utensils were provided. I had to flag down the gentleman who filled our water glasses (his work ethic was spotless) to bring forks.
6. We ordered coffee when they brought the cake. It took a very long time to bring us coffee. Cream and sugar were not provided. The staff did not ask in advance and no staff asked when the coffees were ultimately brought. So, we asked for it and by the time they finally returned, we had finished the black coffees. No refills were offered. And yes, the coffee was barely warm.
7. When the bill came, I discussed the items with the waiter. He corrected them and upon receipt, he then added the coffees. It smacked of a bait and switch moment. We initially thought the coffees were waived because the restaurant did not provide a birthday dessert as Richard said they normally do, even though we had brought our own cake.
8. There were other concerns, yet I listed enough for now.
I am highly disappointed with the service, the health issues of a server, and the very poor quality of food. Their establishment has really slipped, unlike their prices. Cost should equal service and product quality. Here, we have high cost, lousy service and subpar food.
You are way better off going to Eddie V's, Haywire, or Steak 48, NOT McCormick and Schmicks.
