I stopped by in a hurry to purchase meat and wine for a recipe. The employee asked for my ID, and when I showed it to her, she refused to sell me the wine because the ID had expired. I understand that stores have policies regarding alcohol sales, but I am 42 years old, and my date of birth and photo were clearly visible. When I asked whether the ID needed to be scanned, I was told that they only needed to look at it, which made the refusal even more confusing. A family member who works there also tried to help, but the employee and the supervisor accompanying her were both very unpleasant and dismissive. My concern is not simply that the sale was refused, but the way the situation was handled. I left feeling frustrated and embarrassed. I then stopped at Walmart, where I showed the same ID and was able to make my purchase without any issue because it clearly showed that I was over 21. I have always considered H‑E‑B a wonderful store, but I hope management reviews and clearly communicates its ID policy and reminds employees to handle situations like this with courtesy and professionalism. Even when a policy must be enforced, customers should still be treated respectfully.
