First of all, I think too many people give 5 stars because either there just wasn't really anything wrong or it met their expectations which might not always have been that high to begin with. I believe giving 5 stars should be like a 10 in gymnastics or diving (rarely given to only exceptional performances).
That being said, I gave The Texas Grill 5 stars across the board for exceptional food, service and atmosphere.
I had previously pulled into a restaurant down the street (which I won't name because I'm not here to bash them, they may be good as well) and as I entered it was about 8:30 and they close at 9. So I was greeted with, "Are you wanting to place an order to go?" When I replied with "No. I would like to eat here." She kind of gave the waitress a look as to reluctantly wait on me.
So after looking at the menu and not feeling it and noticing the last other people were getting ready to leave, I decided to get up and leave.
I remembered passing The Texas Grill and noticing some people still in there. So despite the fact that their reviews weren't as good when I was checking restaurants in the area before my phone died, I decided to go there. By this time it's about 8:40 and they too closed at 9. Normally, I wouldn't go to dine in that close to closing time but I knew it was the only place open and I was driving back to Spring so I couldn't really eat it in the car while driving. So when I entered I was greeted nicely and asked if I wanted to order to go or dine in and when I said dine in she didn't hesitate but instead nicely said to sit wherever I wanted. After sitting down, I noticed that there were three ladies at one table, a couple waiting on a to go order and a family of about eight at another table, both of those tables dining in hadn't gotten their food yet so I felt more comfortable ordering a meal and not feeling rushed to eat it. Turns out that I was not rushed at all and the waitress was super friendly and very patient as I tried to decide what I wanted. Aside from that, the chicken fried steak, green beans and onion rings were excellent. I finished every bite and the chicken fried steak was super tender and not tough or chewy and even the white gravy was perfect. Just as your grandma would make, not trying to reinvent the gravy like some places do.
But the thing that took it over and above was that while most managers or owners would be irritated or trying to rush you out as it was already 15 minutes after closing, the owner came around to check on everyone and was joking with all of them. And when I asked if he had an adapter to plug my charging cord in because my phone was dead he said he didn't but remembered that he had a charging block in his truck and even went out to get it so I could charge my phone. Then after I finished my meal he came.over and we talked a few minutes more. Super nice guy and genuinely wanting his customers to be satisfied. Needless to say, I would eat here again and recommend to others. I will also try his place in Sheppard when passing through and will definitely try his barbecue at his new food truck he said he just opened on weekends in Sheppard. If his barbecue is as good as his chicken fried steak, I'm sure it will do well.
I apologize that I don't remember the owners name, as I'm sure he told me, but my short term memory abandoned me more then a few years ago. Hopefully I will run into him again one day at one of his restaurants.
Thanks for the hospitality of you and your servers and the great food!
