Few places like OG Chicken are available to the Arlington area: more decadent Halal-style foods with a menu that is pretty extensive in its flavor options. On our end, we decided to have a Friday feast: we ordered two platters (one chicken, another 50-50 steak and chicken), one OG burger with fries, and a chicken fajiro.
No doubt about it, the platters are packed with food. The chicken is quite tender and still offers a good chew to it, and the steak is savory, a bit tangy, and also tender (though I believe the chicken’s tandoori-adjacent spice mix offered the better experience). The rice is tasty (though I personally wouldn’t mind a higher meat-to-rice ratio), some vegetables offer freshness (mostly just lettuce), and I’ll get to the French fries in a bit.
The burger was piping hot and a true smasher. It’s 4 oz per patty, you get two of them covered by your slices of cheese, and this being the OG burger, the grilled onions and pickles offer the sweet-and-acidic combo you need for a smasher burger. It was darn tasty… but I did get it with fries, too, and my God, there is no exaggeration: this place has the finest fries I’ve tasted in Texas.
They’ve a crisp to them that fades quickly after you bite in, the interior is soft and almost peppery, and the closest comparable item I can think of is probably Checker’s French fries (but these had a lifetime of love, professional development, and general excellence). The fries are really tasty (and you get them in the platters, too). I liked dipping mine in the Old Bay-tasting hot sauce they’ve got (not quite similar to shatta, the red sauce I might expect at a halal-style eatery, but still quite nice). Give the fries a try. A lot of money to be made if they just sold them in a massive bucket.
The final food, the fajiro, was the most unique item we ordered. It’s a quesadilla that is more like two triangular pieces of pita cooked to become almost like thin focaccia, sandwiching a robust amount of chicken, cheese, and sauce. They’re a fine cut above the quesadillas you’d get from Chili’s and some sit-down Tex-Mex places, and you get an appreciable amount of chicken in them, too (so you’re not eating glorified cheese sandwiches made with thin bread).
Service was carried out ably by the gentlemen who work here. They’ll explain the foods, ask how everything tastes, and they also offer free bottled water in case you forget your own flask at home (it was a Friday, what can I say?). The interior is also quite nice, actually. Sure, the booths could be a bit better-cushioned, but the color scheme is hip and energetic. One thing I cannot approve of is the insufficient air conditioning. It was hot inside the place, and if you’re sensitive to heat (which I am) and sweat when you eat a lot of spicy food (which I do, but again, what can I say?), you’re getting a bit of a drenching.
That being said, air conditioning might be the one and only advantage a lot of “higher-class” dine-ins have over OG Chicken and Gyro. If you’re with a group and enjoy pretty atrocious rap music and flavorful food in large portions, there’s lots of room to do so. Otherwise, I’d recommend taking the food with you home. The food is as OG in your dining room as it is at the counter.
I’ve already been here twice since they opened, and I genuinely enjoyed everything so much! The chicken platter was fresh, juicy, and full of flavor, the OG fries were absolutely delicious, and the chicken quesadilla was cheesy and cooked perfectly. The place is also very nice, clean, pretty, and welcoming. The staff is extremely kind and generous too. I loved every bite and will definitely keep coming back!
