Disappointing and Uncomfortable Experience My husband, daughter, and I were in the Neshaminy Mall area and decided to get breakfast from this Chick-fil-A. We placed a mobile drive-thru order, picked up our food, and ate in our car. Afterward, my daughter needed to use the restroom, so she and I went inside. I threw away the trash from the food we had just purchased and then walked with her toward the restroom in the back of the restaurant. As we walked by a table where two individuals who appeared to be members of management were sitting, the gentleman asked me, “Can I help you?” It caught me off guard, so I said, “Excuse me?” He again asked, “Can I help you?” I explained that my daughter needed to use the restroom. I even found myself explaining that we had just purchased food, had eaten in our car, and were only coming inside because my daughter needed the bathroom. He then told me that he noticed me come in and was wondering why I was walking toward the back. That made me extremely uncomfortable. I responded that, yes, we were walking back there to use the restroom like everyone else. After my daughter finished, we walked out of the restroom and both individuals were looking at us. I said, “Have a blessed day,” and the gentleman said something under his breath. At that point, I told him, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” My husband then needed to use the restroom, so we accompanied him back inside. Interestingly, the same gentleman greeted my husband when he came in. My daughter and I sat at a table while we waited for him, and once he came out, we all left. The entire interaction left me feeling singled out, watched, and unwelcome in a restaurant where my family had just spent money. I cannot know what was in this gentleman’s mind, but as a woman of color walking into the restaurant with my young daughter, the way we were questioned and watched made me feel as though we were being racially profiled and that we did not belong there. No customer should have to justify why they are walking toward a restroom in a restaurant—especially after purchasing food there. My daughter witnessed this interaction as well, which made the experience even more upsetting. We were simply a family stopping for breakfast and a child who needed to use the restroom. I have eaten at Chick-fil-A locations before without experiencing anything like this. Unfortunately, after the way my daughter and I were treated at this location, I will not return.

Honestly I was insulted. In drive thru, had not said a word and the person called me sir. I’m sorry, but they didn’t see me or hear me speak and still called me sir. I’m not now nor have I ever been a sir.
