Very disappointing meal and, honestly, a waste of money.
The drunken noodles were the only dish that was somewhat good, but even those were completely steeped in sauce and came with soggy lettuce and large chunks of tomato that felt completely out of place.
The Pad Thai was also drowning in sauce and had an unbearable fish sauce smell. We couldn’t eat it and left the dish untouched.
The hot and sour chicken was probably the biggest disappointment. It came as huge, KFC-style pieces of chicken with a strange, powdery consistency and a drizzle of tomato purée on top. We managed only a few bites before giving up.
The Tom Yum soup was watery and lacked the depth and flavor you would expect. The spring rolls and chicken dumplings were okay, but nothing special.
What makes this even more disappointing is that I looked through the previous reviews and photos before coming here. What we were served looked and tasted nothing like what previous customers had posted. Either the kitchen has changed significantly, or we happened to visit on a very bad day when the regular chef wasn’t there.
Regardless, a restaurant should be consistent. Aside from the drunken noodles, almost everything we ordered was either barely touched or left behind. Definitely not worth what we paid.
Restaurant Review: Mae Ploy Thai Cuisine
I don't know how, but I keep missing this place. Tonight, was feeling Thai and remembered to look for it on GrubHub. And boy, was I glad I finally tried them out!
As always, I order a small variety of options when I order out (it'll last me 2-3 meals). Order included a Shrimp Summer Roll, Mu Ping, Shrimp Drunken Noodles and Mango Sticky Rice. I also ordered a Thai Iced Tea with boba (duh) and Pineapple fusion tea with mango bubbles. Prices were fair and I was specifically impressed with the drink cups - a solid, reuseable plastic compared to the normal single-use most restaurants provide. They also use compostable take-out clamshell containers (with exception of the one for the noodles, understandably), which I appreciate and is a thoughtful touch.
The Mu Ping was probably the surprise standout — grilled pork with a chili-lime dipping sauce, and it was absolutely delicious. Tons of flavor and probably my favorite thing I ordered. The shrimp drunken noodles were also excellent and packed with flavor.
For drinks, I tried both the Thai iced tea and a pineapple fusion tea. The fusion tea was really refreshing, but that Thai iced tea was something else — sweet, creamy, and extra tasty. Definitely the winner of the two.
I also tried the shrimp summer roll. It was good, but probably the only thing that didn't really stand out. The rice paper was very thin and sticky and kept tearing, and I thought they could've been a little more generous with the shrimp. The peanut dipping sauce was great that went with it!
Finishing it off with mango sticky rice for dessert, which was solid and on par with others I've had.
Side note: I missed a call from them and realized they were probably calling about the tea. My fusion tea did not have the mango bubbles and may have been a different flavor (no biggie on either) - so appreciate the extra effort to meet my expectations!
Overall, A+, 5-star first experience. I got this delivered, so will give the atmosphere a positive score, but I really don't know. The Mu Ping alone is worth going back for, and there's a bunch more on the menu I want to try. If you're in the area and like Thai food, definitely give Mae Ploy a shot! My new go-to for Thai!
Percy (my cat) was intrigued, too.
