Just moved here from Houston, so I wasn't sure what a 4.3 Star Mexican place would be like and, well, it was VERY disappointing.
My wife and I ordered the chips & salsa, the #4 bean tostada+enchilada plate and the Chile rellenos plate. Both the plates come with beans & rice and a drink.
FOOD:
- The tostada was okay. The crispy tortilla was decent but nothing worth writing home about. The beans were very thin, like they were cut with too much water. Their texture was good though, not too runny despite having watered down flavor. The beans were topped with iceberg lettuce which was VERY fresh and crispy! And also topped with shredded monterrey jack cheese. I had hoped for queso fresco or a mix or shredded cheese and queso fresco. I also hoped for crema (Mexican sour cream) and maybe a little Pico de Gallo but no luck.
- we chose a cheese enchilada and the sauce was good with a strong flavor of chiles, the tortilla was good, but the cheese stuffing wasn't very flavorful and there wasn't much of it
- the rice was decent
- the Chile relleno batter was actually EXCELLENT. The poblano pepper was perfect, but the cheese was very liquidy, not just melty. I dont know what cheese they used, but it wasn't queso Oaxaca nor panels. The Chile rellenos were served in a delicious red sauce, possibly the same as the enchilada sauce.
- the corn tortillas served with the the chile rellenos were very warm and delicious!
- the chile relleno plate came with lettuce, Pico de Gallo (sans jalapeño), crema and guacamole. The Pico/salsa needed jalapeño. The crema was good. The lettuce was excellent. The guacamole was bad. It was either made a while ago with too much water or it was a pre-packaged guacamole paste. It had no garlic, tomatoes, onions, cilantro or any flavor. I would be happy with just one of those ingredients but it had none.
- the chips were fresh made and EXCELLENT
- the salsa served with the chips was a raw, chopped style, NOT roasted, nor mashed/blended. It was almost like Pico de Gallo, but only had onions, tomatoes and cilantro, no jalapeño. It was very disappointing in my opinion, but some folks might like this style.
- the salsa bar has 4 salsas three of which were BAD and one was ok. The smooth green one and both red Salsas were pretty much just watery flavorless spice. The tomatillo salsa was alright, but could've used some more salt, or maybe some more onions or peppers.
- the salsa bar also has pickled carrots and onions which were VERY fresh and delicious!
SERVICE:
the server at the counter was very friendly, but she didn't tell me there was a salsa bar at all, and it has a closed top so the only way I knew it was there was because I spotted little plastic to-go containers on top and took a guess that salsa was under the steel cover. The restaurant ran out of lids for the drink cups, so they don't keep materials well stocked it seems. The soda machine ran out of carbonation and I had to get the staff the fix it. It seems the restaurant doesn't monitor those machines frequently.
PRICES:
I think this place is way overpriced and not worth what you get. But, I am saying that as a recent transplant from Houston where things are MUCH more affordable. Heck, even Portland has more affordable Mexican dining options, with better food to boot!
CLEANLINESS:
I have to say this was one of the cleanest spots I've been to in a while! The floors, tables, chairs, drink station, service counter and salsa bar were all kept in pristine clean order! Bravo!
Key takeaways: disappointing, I do not recommend, but if I were to go back, I'd definitely have the chile rellenos again since they were good!
