Our experience with Jakes Catering was defined by a level of unprofessionalism and dehumanization that no couple should ever endure. While our wedding was beautiful, it was beautiful in spite of Jakes Catering, not because of them.
Early on, a venue name mix-up led to us being booked for a space that physically could not hold our 250+ guests—a fact the representative knew, yet never corrected until my wife and I raised concerns. When we asked why this wasn't flagged, we were told it was because of our "budget." We had never once expressed budget concerns. As a Black couple, the immediate assumption that we couldn't afford the appropriate space felt loaded and set a discriminatory tone for the rest of our engagement.
The hostility wasn't reserved just for us. Our family members witnessed firsthand the blatant disrespect shown to our guests and vendors. Multiple vendors of color were yelled at and dehumanized by the staff to the point that they have explicitly stated they will never work with Jakes Catering again. To see professional partners treated with such vitriol was devastating.
Communication was dismissive and inconsistent throughout. When my wife calmly advocated for her needs, the representative who was already cold and difficult—falsely accused her of being "aggressive" during a walkthrough she didn’t even attend. This was a transparent attempt to lean into a harmful, tired trope used to discredit Black clients who advocate for themselves. It was heart breaking seeing my wife experience this from someone meant to help us.
When these issues were raised to management, we were met with defensiveness rather than accountability. Furthermore, after posting a detailed account of our experience, Jakes Catering quietly had our reviews removed, proving they are more interested in protecting their image than correcting their behavior.
If you are a couple of color, or if you value equity and basic professional decency, think carefully before trusting this company. Their behavior was coded, their communication was hostile, and their treatment of our community was unacceptable.

Jake’s Catering failed us in ways that were deeply unprofessional, harmful, and disturbing. Much of this conduct originated with Abby, with Alyson participating and allowing it to continue.
Abby repeatedly behaved in a hostile and inappropriate manner toward us and toward vendors of color. This included raising her voice and yelling at vendors of color during professional interactions, creating an atmosphere of intimidation rather than coordination. Her tone was aggressive, dismissive, and combative in situations that required calm leadership. This behavior occurred across multiple interactions and was witnessed by others.
Alyson did not intervene or attempt to de-escalate. Instead, she mirrored the dismissive posture and allowed the conduct to persist. Together, they fostered an environment in which vendors of color working our wedding were interrupted, spoken down to, and treated with open disrespect.
What escalated this situation significantly was Abby’s conduct behind the scenes. Abby engaged in gossip about my wife, falsely characterizing her to other vendors as “aggressive” and “demanding.” These statements were not only untrue, they were inflammatory and racially coded. They circulated widely enough that they were eventually reported back to us. When we raised this issue, Jake’s Catering was unable to corroborate or substantiate Abby’s claims, because they were false. Despite this, no retraction or accountability followed.
Abby also openly stated that she believed we could not afford the venue - a remark that was entirely inappropriate, presumptive, and revealing. This statement had no factual basis and no relevance to her role. It was demeaning and crossed a clear professional boundary.
The impact of Abby’s behavior extended beyond us. Multiple vendors of color independently told us they would never work with Jake’s Catering again, explicitly citing the severity of the racism, hostility, and mistreatment they experienced particularly from Abby and Alyson. These were established professionals who were disturbed enough by what they endured to permanently sever future working relationships. That level of fallout does not occur without serious misconduct.
When concerns were raised, there was no accountability. Abby did not retract her false statements. Alyson did not intervene. No meaningful apology was offered. No corrective action was taken. The behavior continued unchecked.
Instead of being supported on our wedding day, we were forced to manage the emotional and professional consequences of this conduct. That burden should never fall on clients, especially in an industry built on trust, care, and celebration.
This review reflects direct, firsthand experiences and the statements that were relayed back to us by vendors involved. Abby’s actions, in particular, were damaging enough to harm reputations, destroy professional relationships, and leave lasting impact.
Jake’s Catering allowed this conduct to occur and continue. That is a failure of leadership, accountability, and basic professionalism.
Proceed with extreme caution.

The Tualatin Hills Swim Club recently held our Awards banquet for our team at the Sentinel catered by Jake’s and I can’t say enough about how fantastic the experience was. With over 400 guests in attendance, we had some big logistical challenges, but the team at Jake’s handled everything with incredible flexibility, professionalism, and top-tier responsiveness.
From the very first inquiry, they were quick to respond to all of our questions and provided clear, detailed information to ensure we were on the same page. As we started to finalize plans, our needs changed a few times—whether it was adjusting the event schedule, managing a larger-than-expected turnout, or even adding another table at the last hour. The venue staff didn’t hesitate to accommodate us at every turn, and they truly went above and beyond to ensure everything was set up exactly how we needed.
What really stood out was how well they understood the unique needs of a nonprofit event. They were sensitive to our budget constraints and worked with us to make the event possible without sacrificing quality. The entire process felt like a true partnership—every question was answered quickly, every change was handled with grace.
The venue itself was perfect for our needs—spacious, clean, and well-equipped. The staff was always present and available, making sure everything ran seamlessly, without disrupting the flow of our event.
I highly recommend Jake’s Catering to anyone planning a large-scale event, especially for nonprofits. Their level of service, dedication, and commitment to making our event a success was truly impressive. It’s rare to find a venue that is as flexible and accommodating as they were, and it made all the difference in creating a memorable evening for our swimmers and their families!
A great cheese steak.
