  Love this place! A friend & I went Friday night because we always know we’ll get incredible food here. I am dairy & gluten-free, and although much of their menu is good for DF/GF, they offered to altar some dishes that typically aren’t for me without me asking. Management was also friendly. Will be back!

  A really nice cozy sit down dinner place! Food was great, we ordered tandoori platter, the seasoning and smokiness of meat balanced out so perfectly, garlic naan is delish! Nice and friendly service. Will come again next time we’re in town!

  Years ago, acting on the recommendation of my best friend’s medical school classmate, a refined, East Coast-based foodie of Indian descent and possessor of a truly discerning palate, my best and I visited East India Company in downtown Portland. I’ll be honest, I assumed a fancy, date night ambiance couldn't produce top-tier food, but we were proven wrong the moment I tried their incredible Fish Makhani, a dish originally a special recommended by our waitress. We were skeptical to order it because it didn’t seem it would be good combo, but the waitress still recommended it. Presenting every dish flawlessly is the standard at East India Company. The service is unparalleled, with every staff member exhibiting deliberate care, protecting the artistry of the plating with even the spoon and silver settings. After that first visit, my friend and I always went back. We didn't go in person after that initial , but we would often call in an order to go, always making a special request to have the person on the phone ask the chef. The answer was rarely yes, but it was worth the try for that one dish. Until recently, I hadn't eaten there in person since that initial visit. I went back recently and asked the waiter for the Fish Makhani. He also stated they didn't have it, adding that it’s not something that normally goes together. He checked with the chef, who also said no. I went with the Chicken Makhani, which is fine, because their makhani is amazing no matter what. I also ordered the Samosa chaat, mixed tandoori plate and garlic naan, which were all great. The only improvement I would make on the Samosa chat is making the crust a little thinner and flakier, and an extra side of whatever chutney sauce they have artistically drawn on the plate. Later on, the owner happened to walk by. When I shared the lore of our Fish Makhani journey with him, he genuinely appreciated my story and said that in fact he does enjoy fish Makhani at home..then he doubled down that it will be back on the menu for our future trips. He explained the restaurant had changed ownership a couple of times, which made it harder to ask for the Fish Makhani, but promised it will be available next time. The sophisticated ambiance and exceptional service make this place a true gem. Don’t get me wrong, There are very good authentic Indian restaurants in and outside of downtown Portland like in Hillsboro/Beaverton and beyond, but the fact that I know I have this Nextdoor makes it hard to go anywhere else. Not to mention hands-down the best Makhani I’ve ever had! (I also have a refined palette for ethnic food, I used to live in the Bay Area if that helps anyone reading this.)
