Given the 4.7-star rating, I was looking forward to trying this spot, but it fell far short of expectations. As an Ethiopian myself I say the food lacked the authentic flavor profile I expected. We ordered three full meals (one shero (vegetarian meal) and two meat dishes), but everything was crammed onto a single platter. The overall portion size definitely did not reflect three full entrees. The customer service was highly selective. While tables around us received attentive check-ins and individual platters, our table was largely ignored. When I brought up the issue, the server became defensive rather than apologetic, asking if I had "explicitly requested separate plates." If a party pays for three distinct entrees, they shouldn't have to specify they want the full portion of what they ordered. Their solution was to bring empty plates for us to manually scoop food off the main platter, which was a very odd fix after the fact.Even my kids(minors) noticed how differently we were treated compared to other diners. No restaurant can truly thrive by alienating customers who know the cuisine best. Constructive criticism should be an opportunity to grow, not an excuse to get defensive.

I had two half-orders, so I could enjoy some variety. Both dishes (lentils and beef) were tasty and not overly spicy. It's always interesting to eat using the injera. The owner was chatty and personable. I would go back.

For more than a decade, this has been our favorite Ethiopian restaurant in Portland, and it never disappoints. If you’re looking for authentic Ethiopian food, this is the place to experience it. Every dish is made with care, tradition, and incredible flavor. Our family comes back again and again because the food is consistently fresh, delicious, and truly unforgettable. Some of our absolute favorites are: • Beef Tibs • Portobello Mushroom • Chicken with spinach • Sambusa Appetizers • The authentic injera, which is always soft, fresh, and perfect for sharing What makes this restaurant even more special is that it’s genuinely family owned and operated. From the talented chef in the kitchen to the friendly servers and bartender, everyone makes you feel like you’re part of the family. A special thank you to Peter, who runs the front of the restaurant. His dry sense of humor, welcoming personality, and outstanding hospitality make every visit memorable. He always keeps everyone laughing and does an amazing job making guests feel right at home. The restaurant has a cozy, charming atmosphere that feels like a hidden treasure in Southeast Portland. It’s peaceful, intimate, and the perfect place to enjoy a meal with family and friends. They are open Wednesday through Sunday, and because it’s a popular neighborhood favorite with limited seating, we recommend making a reservation or arriving early. Supporting local family-owned businesses like this is something we truly value. After more than 10 years of dining here, we can confidently say this remains one of Portland’s best Ethiopian restaurants. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Highly recommended. If you’re visiting Portland or simply want to experience incredible Ethiopian cuisine, this is a restaurant you absolutely must try. We can’t wait for our next visit!
