I teach at the ammo plant on occassion and always eat at least one meal here when I visit. I'd say it's one of the best places in McAlester. I've eaten here many times and have never had an issue w/ food or service, thank goodness. I visited on a MON, early, about 4:30, plenty of parking, quickly seated. The pre-dinner rolls are fantastic & hugely addictive- i didn't even need an appetizer. Makayla was my server, very good and attentive. It's neat to be greeted with a pleasant, genuine smile. Ordered the 2 piece catfish dinner w/ cole slaw & fries as my 2 sides, also came w/ 2 small hushpuppies. The fish was crisp, piping hot, not over breaded and good portion sizes. Hushpuppies were crisp, hot, not hard as a rock. Coleslaw was crisp and very tasty, served w/ a huge pile of perfectly cooked fries...the "gourmet" ketchup is also very good. My meal was very reasonably priced. It's a cool place, a good vibe, the staff all seem to enjoy working there. I'll always go back.

Took the family out to eat after a hard day‘s work at home mowing the pasture. I say again the family, weordered our food. Wifeys steak was well done instead of medium. We were surprised because this was the second time in a row this had happened. So instead of eating it well done We asked if they would remake the steak medium. The Wifey had not gotten her food yet by the time everybody else had finished eating, which was probably 15 minutes or so. We finally asked is that medium steak ready yet? they went and checked and said wow it just popped there. We were like well honestly it’s about time cause that took forever. No manager came over. No free dessert was offered for her. Have ate her food all by herself plus her baked potato and okra was cold after 15 minutes or so waiting. Disappointed we were due to the fact, this was the second Time it was cooked well done instead of medium. So unfortunately, the family did not eat together, the Wifey got to eat her food while we just sat there and waited for her. In my opinion, a manager should’ve came over, but it is what it is.

The deceptive exterior does not fool the locals! We got here just before the crowd. I enjoyed excellent catfish, lightly seasoned with hushpuppies and a baked sweet potato. My husband enjoyed some kind of seafood platter with fried catfish, etoufee and shrimp. The device was quick and the food was very hot and fresh. I loved the atmosphere with the canoe on the ceiling, American flag of mini lights and the nice mix of rock, blues and country hits.

My husband and my father got the in house battered lunch fish meal and both were thrown off and surprised when it came cornmeal dusted/fried. They were expecting an actual battered light & crispy fish. It does not say on the menu anything about cornmeal. I ordered the surf and turf and my steak was medium well rather than medium. The steak was MID. The upcharge for Gouda mashed potatoes is 99 cents but honestly they were MID and dry. The shrimp skewer was overcooked and rubbery with zero flavor. The upsetting part for me was they do not have an option to add on one crab cake per the waitress. Okay fine, I'll order the two piece appetizer so I can have a "maryland style" crab cake with my $26 meal making my meal $36. Someone at Captain John's needs to educate themselves on what a maryland style crab cake is. We received two overly fried discs that tasted mostly like oil and filler. Maryland style is pan seared, lightly browned lumpy and full of crab chunks and meat with a very light amount of filler. It's thick and juicy. Not dry and flat. They should change their description to coated/battered fried crab cake disc so people know what they are getting. They should update their menu to reflect what you think you're getting is actually what is being described. The diet Pepsi was flat. It's not hard to make sure your pop stays up to date especially with the cost of a single pop these days since they factor in refills for everyone. Why didn't we ask for new food or for anything to be recooked? We are traveling and not everyone has time to do that when they are on a schedule. I don't mind paying $36.00 for a meal but if it costs that much, you better make damn sure the taste reflects the cost and unfortunately, it did not. We will not be back. One & done for us and we travel through Mcaslester quite often for business.
