Banana pudding is what people come here for, but between the two, I found the key lime cheesecake to be the star. Great balance of tart and sweet and fantastic crust.

This seems like a place that’s riding off an expired reputation from the past, and has gotten lazy. The cakes were dry, the banana pudding was pretty mid, and the employees seemed miserable. With a million places to pick from in NYC, why come here?

As I walked in, it was a little cramped instead since there were quite a bit of people but pretty much no seating inside, so I had to eat outside. I got the original banana pudding and it was delicious and creamy, and worth the hype.

Magnolia Bakery has been on this corner of Bleecker Street for decades and became a genuine cultural moment after a famous TV show put it on the map, but walking past the line outside on any given day tells you the cupcakes were already doing the work long before that. The shop itself is small, pink and white, a little cramped with display cases up front packed with cakes, pies, and rows of cupcakes in every flavor. We got a classic vanilla cupcake with vanilla buttercream, and the frosting is really the star here, swirled high and sweet without being cloying, soft cake underneath that holds up well even after sitting in a box for a while. We also tried the red velvet, properly tangy from the cream cheese frosting, and a banana pudding, which turned out to be a sleeper favorite of the visit, layers of vanilla wafers, fresh banana, and pudding that wasn't overly sweet. Someone in our group got a slice of the icebox cake, dense and chocolatey, a nice change of pace from the cupcakes. Lines move quickly even when they look long from outside, the staff have clearly done this a thousand times and keep things efficient. It's touristy, no question, but the quality holds up regardless of the crowd, and grabbing a cupcake to eat on a bench nearby in the West Village is a pretty nice way to spend twenty minutes.

Magnolia is iconic, though there are many better bakeries out there in terms of quality of the desserts. We got the banana bread pudding and two types of cake. The staff at this location are working hard to meet demand. The vibes are stressful when it’s crowded.
