Houston Hall perfectly captures the aesthetic of a gritty, no-frills neighborhood dive—complete with uneven floors and rustic wooden benches—while quietly charging you premium Manhattan prices. Don't let the phrase "happy hour" fool you; the drink specials here feel remarkably like standard prices anywhere else in the city. The illusion of exclusivity starts right at the entrance, where a doorman guards the place like you're trying to bypass the velvet ropes at Studio 54, rather than just walking into a casual downtown beer hall. Despite the bizarre door vibe and the steep tab for a wooden bench experience, the place has its saving graces. The service is genuinely friendly once you make it inside, and they maintain a very solid, decent beer selection. Ultimately, if you are already in the neighborhood and simply thirsty, it gets the job done. However, it is absolutely not worth going out of your way just to go there—stop by for a good pint only if it happens to be right on your path.

Unprofessional and rude door staff. Completely ruined the experience before even walking in. Management needs to address the attitude at the entrance.

Was just at a ticketed event where there was no free water. The typical water jugs that are usually set at the end of the bar were put away, and if you asked for water from the bar, the only option was a $6 plastic bottle Someone ended up passing out and they gave her free water, so I guess that’s one way to get it

You can buy tickets to an event here and there will still be people who tell you you're not allowed on the dance floor anymore after 8:30 pm because it's "advanced dancers only"... what's the point of buying tickets to an all night event if you can't dance past 830? Either sell extremely discounted tickets or advertise it as ADVANCED DANCERS ONLY, NO EXCEPTIONS.
