Celebrate a Sweet 16, Mitzvah, Corporate Event, Wedding, or Cocktail party with our Indoor and Outdoor event catering. The Refuge has one of the most popular Sunday brunches on Long Island.
I've gone to this place from time to time over the past year and a half since moving to New York, and I've genuinely enjoyed it, which is what makes this so disappointing to write.
About two weeks ago, I went to pay my bill and ended up waiting 15 minutes at checkout, with somewhere else to be, before a staff member came over and said, "Hey, we can't find your card. We actually gave it to somebody else." That's how I found out a stranger had walked out with my credit card and that I had unknowingly paid his bill.
To their credit, they did apologize in the moment. A few days later, the customer himself called the restaurant to say he had my card and would bring it back. After that, nothing. No follow-up, no update, no effort to coordinate getting the card back to me. When I finally called to check in, the response was, "Just cancel your card." No "we'll make this right," no attempt to take ownership of cleaning up their own mistake. I paused the card rather than canceling it, but that's not really the point.
I understand that once the card left the restaurant, it was partly out of their hands. But they could have called the guy back, followed up, helped coordinate, anything to spare me from chasing down a mess that they created. Instead, the burden was entirely on me.
A serious mistake was made. Handing a stranger someone else's credit card is not a small error, and the response after the initial apology has been indifference.

First time coming to the refuge for barkin brunch! The tiramisu stuffed french toast was so delicious!! I’d definitely come back with my dogs and order different items! The outdoor seating area was cute and very spacious for a night or afternoon out with friends and the dogs! I wish I took a picture of my French toast but I ate it so fast 😅

Friendly staff. Marlin was very kind and always made sure I was taken care of. I went for their barkin brunch and it was busy so service was slower than usual, but again that is to be expected when it’s super busy and there is an event. Bloody Mary’s are on point. They have a lot of events that are dog friendly so sign me up. If you have pets, check out those events and I recommend going :)

That was absolutely amazing. The food was great as always, and the drinks came out very fast as well as the food. And I would never expect that for a Friday night. This was a great experience and I’ll definitely be back again. Thank you Val for everything! You were absolutely amazing and attentive!
