  I went shopping at Stop & Shop in Eastchester, NY. I was a little lost regarding shopping for some items. Janet, the manager, was kind and patient and helped me shop for the items I was looking for. I was very touched by her patience; she never made me feel like I was bothering her while she assisted me. The kindness and respect today are a rarity, but not for Janet; she exuded all those qualities. Stop & Shop should recognize Janet for those qualities and her exemplary customer service skills.

  My mother is 85 years old, disabled, and dependent on oxygen. Because of her physical limitations, she orders her groceries online and relies on home delivery. She lives in an apartment building with an elevator. Yesterday, she placed a large grocery order. When the delivery arrived, the driver, John, told her that she would have to come down to the lobby to retrieve her groceries. She explained that she is disabled, uses oxygen, and is unable to come downstairs to carry groceries back to her apartment. Despite knowing this, he refused to bring the order upstairs and simply left her groceries unattended in the lobby. When we contacted Stop & Shop customer service, we were told that they do not handle the actual deliveries and that it is “at the discretion of the delivery person whether they choose to bring groceries to a customer’s apartment door”. That response is completely unacceptable. Stop & Shop hires and authorizes these delivery vendors to represent its business. As a business owner myself, I understand that when I hire a vendor, that vendor’s conduct reflects directly on my company. I would never simply tell a customer, “They’re an outside vendor, so we’re not responsible.” If a vendor is not providing the level of service I expect my customers to receive, it is my responsibility to address it. At the very least, Stop & Shop should clearly disclose BEFORE customers place and pay for their orders that delivery to their actual apartment door is not guaranteed and may be left to the discretion of the individual driver. Elderly and disabled customers are ordering groceries for delivery precisely because they may not be physically capable of going to a lobby and carrying bags of groceries upstairs. Stop & Shop certainly has no problem charging more than $20 in delivery-related fees, yet apparently cannot guarantee that a disabled 85-year-old woman on oxygen will actually have her groceries delivered to her door. Shame on Stop & Shop for its complete lack of compassion for elderly and disabled customers and for its dismissive approach to customer service and their lack of accountability. Customers paying for grocery delivery services deserve to know exactly what service they are paying for—and they certainly deserve better than this!

  I’d rather go to the Stop & Shop in Cross County or even White Plains - this one is kind of a dump.
