I travel frequently for work, and when in a new city, I prefer to patronize local restaurants, some try ING I cannot get at home. After a quick Google search, my colleague and I settled on Fox Pub and Brewery. Given its history, as well as the British Pub Fare, figured it fit the bill.
In entry, we were given the option of inside or outside, a decision we would come to rethink very quickly. Understand, this is an old house without central A/C, but it was evident once we sat down that the AC couldn’t keep up with the sq footage. Given the option, sit outside. At least there was a breeze.
Once we were sat, it was a waiting game to be greeted. It felt like we were forgotten about. Eventually a server came by and dropped water, but didn’t ask if we wanted straws, or even say our server would be with us shortly. More waiting. Eventually our server came to the table, and it readily appeared she was likely overwhelmed trying to keep up. She took our orders, which were simole salads and an appetizer. She brought our drinks, but again, not a straw to be had. Had to ask a couple times to get a straw. Minor oversight, but also a minor annoyance. I don’t blame our server, though. Like I said, she seemed a bit overwhelmed. At least that’s the story I am going with.
Salads came out, and the chicken tasted watery and bland, like it was frozen and deooped into the grease. It was juicy, but extremely flavorless, like wet paper. The dressing and other ingredients were appropriately flavored, but they could not make up for the overwhelming lack of flavor present in the chicken.
We ended up still waiting for the appetizer, and when asked, we’re told that the salads were quicker than meals, but it was apparent that it was not sent to the kitchen. When it got to the table, it was hot, which told me that it was fresh made. Further evidence it wasn’t ordered when the salads were. My salad had chicken tenders, so I find it hard to believe chicken tenders and fried pickles had drastically different cook times.
As I said, the server seemed overwhelmed, so once our food was dropped, we didn’t see her for a while. Luckily we had additional drinks to fill the gap. When our server came back by, due to another table being sat next to us, we asked for the checks, since our wait made us feel like we had been all but forgotten. Unsurprisingly, the check came quicker than our food.
Overall a very underwhelming experience I would neither recommend nor repeat. The craft beers may be good, and other entrees may be also, but I will not choose the opportunity to repeat. Maybe locals have better experiences, but I would not recommend.
They were worth two stars because while the whole experience was underwhelming, it was far from one star.
