My friend and I stayed in Laughlin recently, and everything was going great until we stopped at The Cove Bar & Lounge inside the Aquarius Casino.
When we arrived, there were only about five other people sitting at the bar, two people in the lounge area behind us, and nobody at the dining tables downstairs. I want to start by saying that the bartenders were great. They were friendly, helpful, and made excellent drinks. Unfortunately, that was the only part of our experience that went well.
The Cove has a weekday happy hour from 4:00–6:00 PM, so we decided to order some food. We were told the happy-hour menu was brand new and apparently, it's been changed several times in the past couple of years. Based on what we tried, they probably need to change it again.
Our server was extremely unhelpful from start to finish. She rarely checked on us, offered very little assistance with the menu, and generally seemed uninterested in providing service.
The only food we ordered that was even reasonably good were the sliders, but they were tiny. You get three for $10, which works out to about $3.33 per slider. For their size and quality, that is not a good value at all.
We stayed for a while, had some great drinks, did some gambling, and before happy hour ended, we decided to order a few more menu items to take back to our room and try. That turned out to be a mistake.
One item came with small slices of steak on top. We specifically requested the steak medium rare, but what came out of the kitchen was cooked well beyond well-done. It was another complete miss. Everything else we tried ranged from disappointing to below average, and we will never order anything from the Cove again.
Then came one of the strangest policies I've encountered. When we told our server that we wanted our remaining order to go, she informed us that they don't prepare food as takeout anymore. Instead, the kitchen had to put our food on regular plates, bring those plates to us, and then we had to transfer the food ourselves into to-go containers.
That makes absolutely no sense. They would rather dirty dishes, use additional soap and water to wash them, and make the customer transfer their own food instead of simply putting a takeout order directly into a takeout container.
We eventually spoke with a manager about the poor service and food quality. She apologized, said she was sorry we had received bad service and below-average food, and said she would bring it to the chef's attention. That was essentially the entire response. There seemed to be very little concern about actually resolving the experience.
Poor management would certainly help explain why both the service and food were so disappointing.
What was especially telling was that when we left only a little while later, the entire bar and downstairs dining area were empty. The only customers we could see were the same two people sitting in the lounge watching television. For a casino bar and restaurant in Laughlin during the evening, that certainly didn't inspire much confidence.
The bartenders deserve credit because they were excellent, but unfortunately, they couldn't make up for the poor service, bad food, questionable takeout policy, and lackluster response from management.
We will not be returning to The Cove Bar & Lounge ever again.
