So difficult for me to write a review of this innovative restaurant when so much that was intended to be wonderful was ruined by two things: too-loud (odd) music, and too much salt in every dish. This is not your grandmother's Mexican restaurant. I expected contemporary background music with Mexican flavor, but the loud music we endured sounded more like an Arab hookah lounge. It was very bothersome, as were loud conversations at nearby tables. We could hear everybody but ourselves. Now, on to the salt load. The menu is innovative, with exceptional care put into the creation of each dish. We started with the guacamole, which was accompanied by both crispy corn tortillas (heavily salted) and flaky pork skins (heavily salted). We were willing to overlook the salty crisps since they were solely botañas, and underneath the salt-forward taste of the guacamole lay some flavorful delights. But after our family style meal arrived, with gorgeous strips of juicy beef and plump, crisp shrimp, we dove in only to be greeted by, you guessed it, salt-forward everything. In fact, so much salt, we had difficulty getting past it to enjoy the divine flavors of the three sauces that adorned this gorgeous platter. To say we were disappointed was an understatement. The food was so salty, we could not finish. When I asked the manager if the salt load could be reduced per order he said yes to some items, but not to the beef strips, since those were marinated. Well, perhaps the chef needs to reduce the salt in the marinade too. Now, all this being said, I realize that many people just LOVE salt. But my husband and I are not spring chickens, so we use less salt in our cooking than a lot of younger people (and restaurants) do. Still, health professionals advise all of us to reduce our sodium intake, no matter our ages, so it might behoove this very modern establishment to reduce the amount of salt in its cuisine. If I could have had that meal with 25% of the salt, I would have loved it. The sauces were heavenly. The carne asada was plump and juicy. The shrimp were perfectly cooked. And the refried beans and rice were exceptional. But we didn't even take our "leftovers" home. Nor did we ask for the enchiladas to go that we had planned buy. Nor did we book our dining group there in August, because, well, having 40 seniors exposed to this salt load and conversation-averse atmosphere, was nothing I felt comfortable doing. Bottom line: a great disappointment. And yet, there was so very much that was wonderful beyond the loud music and salt.
