I come to Char Steakhouse pretty regularly, and Marissa consistently makes every visit a great experience. She always treats us incredibly well, is attentive without being overwhelming, and genuinely knows what she’s doing.
You can tell she understands hospitality and how to make guests feel welcome and taken care of. Employees like her are a big reason why places like Char keep such a strong reputation. She represents the restaurant extremely well and always makes us want to come back.

Visited for the first time on 5/3/25. I had a party of 2. From the moment I walked in I was greeted with warmth and a genuine desire to please. David was our server. He was charming and a pleasure to interact with. He took the time to explain the menu to us with detail and also make some recommendations. The food itself was delicious. Although, I felt like my filet mignon was not near 8 oz and quite smaller than expected. It was more like 6oz. Their asparagus was cooked to perfection. The mashed potatoes were some of the best I've had. They had a drink special called the Midnight Habanero which has to be one of the best cocktails I've ever had. They seriously need to make this a regular on their menu. The service was attentive and I would return to try other things on their menu. It is a steakhouse so while there are non-steak options, I would not necessarily go for those. The aesthetic of the restaurant is beautiful and the atmosphere was quite inviting. If you want to treat yourself to a nice dinner it is worth the splurge.

We have been to CHAR before and have had a wonderful experience. Unfortuately, on a speicailty "Prime Rib" night it was an extremely disappointing experience. We had been there earlier in the month and learned that they were having "Prime Rib" night so I immediately made a reservation for 7 people (later adding an additional person) for the specific purpose of prime rib. When we arrived timely at 7:00 we excitedly remarked to the hostesses that we were looking forward to the prime rib. Unbeknownst to us they, had reportedly already "run out" at 6:45. As this was "Prime Rib" night the hostesses should have been told by management to inform customers that prime rib was not available. We were only notified of this after drinks and appetizers were ordered and our server had to report that they were already out. She was mortified and we were flabbergasted. Our seating was not late at night when it understandably could have been sold out. We explicitly reserved for prime rib night and told them that is what we were there for. The manager tried to placate us with offerring dessert. Because we all were hungry, had already ordered drinks and appetizers our only option was to settle for and order entrees that we didn't particularly want because we came for prime rib. The queen cut filet and lobster tail had the smallest lobster tail I had ever seen and was far more costly than the price for the prime rib. We will not be returning.

We had a great experience for my husband’s birthday dinner at Char. The food was delicious, my burger was undercooked but everything else was over the top fantastic. The death by potatos I could have eaten forever and the truffle fries were the best I’ve ever had. My husband’s NY strip steak was cooked perfectly and he loved it. We also had dessert including the cookie jar and brownie which were incredible for every bite. The service was amazing, we spoke to almost every server in the resturant and they were all great at giving recommendations and just joking around. We had Marissa as our server and she was friendly, very knowledgeable, and just felt like a friend talking to us about the menu and our time there. It truly felt like we were family there. I would highly recommend as the full experience was totally worth it. Also for a steak house they were very reasonably priced with the highest quality and taste of food, worth your money to check them out.
Recommend : meat &, potatoes (short rib & gnocchi), brussel sprouts
Good : mashed potatoes, crab cakes
Meh: tomahawk steak
Pass: ravioli
Overall it was solid and normally I would rate it a 4 but I really wish some of the times were seasoned more plus there were a couple of technical things that I was pretty unhappy about especially considering the price.
The special of the day pea ravioli was pitifully filled and we had at least three ravioli with pasta that was still crunchy. But the losbter that came with it was beautifully cooked.
The tomahawk steaks are quite thin for something advertised as a 20 oz steak and we ordered medium rare. It was definitely not medium rare and overly charred on one side. It was ordered by someone at the table who didn't want to make a fuss but I would have personally sent it back.
We liked the brussel sprouts though it wasn't mentioned they would include peanuts on the menu or by the server so make sure to disclose any allergies beforehand
The short rib and gnocchi were nice and much improved with some pepper. Probably the favorite item of the night.
The potatoes were fluffy and the texture was nice but I would have preferred it to be seasoned more so if you like your potatoes more heavily flavored maybe a pass
The crab cakes were good and not much filler but I didn't care for the very tangy sauce.
They have a fun selection of bread.
I really wish they left the pepper at the table instead of coming over to pepper your food for you, because it was starting to be awkward how much of our food we wanted peppered.
The atmosphere is cool and the outside patio has an adjustable ceiling that can make it more or less open air.
Edited for response: we dined at the Scotch plains location on rt 22
