This is a hard review for me to write. This has been my go to grocery store in the area for several months, even though there is a Walmart, Target, Hannaford, Price Chopper, and smaller markets all within less than a mile. I had gathered my groceries and gone to self check out. I have issues with digital coupons 98% of the time, so i figured that might be the case. After i had added all the items, i wasn’t sure if the sale prices and additional coupons had been subtracted, so i looked for some help. The assistant, Arelis, was chatting with someone (laughing, conversing although groceries were bagged in his arms), so i waited. I raised my hand to signal i needed help, and she eventually ended her conversation, went to others to ask if they needed help and then came to me. Every comment i made was met with sarcasm: i asked “Did i properly add 8 liters of polar drinks?” She counted 6 and accused me of not adding two others. When i pointed out the two she missed, she rolled her eyes and said “i can read”… despite missing the two polar items. When Arelis realized she was wrong, she made sure to tell me it wasn’t her fault, the computer displayed it wrong. When i explained one of the digital coupons never loaded (i showed her, as it was still stuck on buffering on my phone), she stated this was also my mistake because i didn’t know what i was doing. I explained without a raised voice or rude language that i did not think we were communicating well and i would like someone else from customer service. She stated “i am helping you” but she was not. I didn’t want to continue working with her. She refused to call a supervisor, walked away after saying “I’m going to help everyone else first”. I put all my groceries back in my shopping cart and went to look for the customer service desk. She accused me then of trying to leave without paying and loudly exclaimed “you have pay”, several times. I took my cart in another direction, found two gentlemen in yellow vests and asked where the customer service desk was. Before they answered, she came running in between us and told them “don’t talk to her, don’t engage with her”. I repeated i was looking for customer service. She said “well let me out”, as though i was trapping her, even though she had just wailed by cart and I hadn’t moved an inch. Again, i went another direction to find customer service. I asked a woman at another check out station where i could find it. She started to answer when Arelis yelled from somewhere “don’t talk to her”. The woman responded “i was just answering her question” and Arelis yelled back “i don’t care, i told you not to engage with her”. At this point, I did raise my voice to say to anyone who could hear me “can some please call a supervisor or tell me where customer service is?”. (I was later told the service desk had been closed). Finally, i saw another employee walking in my direction. I asked her if she was a supervisor, andi could hear Arelis yelling in the background “i want to talk to you first, don’t talk to her”. The asst manager, joanne was right next to me and asked what was going on. I explained to her i just wanted to check out and pay for my items and leave. I told her this person and i were not communicating, she was sarcastic and rude and i was too old to put up with such abuse and bullying. FYI, i am 68 years old, 110 pounds and disabled. For some reason, some people see this as an opportunity to bully the vulnerable old lady, and this appeared to be what was happening. Joanne took me to the check out area, made sure everything was done properly and i paid. She gave me her and Arelis’ names and then i left. I will not return. Arelis i hope will get more training especially as it relates to bullying vulnerable persons.
