I shouldn't have had as high hopes for the food as I did, even though I was bedazzled by the new interior with all the televisions and projector screens on the wall, and because my name is also Dave.
Food: 2.5/5
First the good: The chicken breast with cheese and guacamole in the chicken sandwich was good, and the side of grilled shrimp I added on was also decently good. However, the green beans were very unappealing, dripping in vegetable oil, somehow undercooked yet burnt, and bitter. I'm happy they could give me a 5 oz. steak rare on the side of the salad instead of cutting it up, but the steak was a very poor quality piece of meat. It was about half sinuous and inedible, it tasted pre-frozen, and also it had a bizarre soapy taste on the exterior. I kid you not, it tasted like the chef had washed the exterior of the meat with dish soap before attempting to grill the exterior. I mean, why? It rendered the outside completely inedible, and very little of what was left inside was able to be chewed. It seems like that grade of meat would have been best suited well done and pre-cut on the salad to mask all its shortcomings. The most interesting thing about the salad were the blue cheese crumbles and pecans, while the rest was just pile of old, bitter and tough iceberg lettuce pieces, some even with brown edges.
Value: 3/5
For how below average the food was, the pricing was, ironically, above average. From this mismatch, I wouldn't consider this to be a very reasonable place price-wise. I've gotten much better food at a Mexican restaurant, and in much greater amount, for half the price.
Service: 3.5/5
The service was a little slow, but the server was very polite and professional. While he wasn't as up to speed on the menu as I would have liked (unsure if the salad steak was cut before or after it was grilled), I did appreciate that he seemed intent on trying to please the customer.
Wait: 3.5/5
The wait for the food was either average or slightly longer than average.
Atmosphere: 3.5/5
The host was very nice and sat me down at a booth that was possibly the best seat in the house, right in front of two walls of 7 large TVs and projector screens. I enjoyed this side of the restaurant, but I was less a fan of the fact that the restrooms were all the way at the back of the super loud game room.
Total score: 3.2/5
Dave & Buster's is really nothing more than a glorified Chuck E. Cheese's-- plus a sports bar. The food is at or below the quality of a sports dive with pre-frozen fare, with the entertainment side of the business model blaring through as pretty much the main event. Too bad they don't have any higher quality restaurants within Hanes Mall. Probably the best one nearby is the Village Tavern that actually makes their food fresh, but it isn't inside the mall.
