Extremely disappointing customer service at this Food Lion in Newport, NC. On August 16 around 10:06 PM, I called because I live 25–30 minutes away, my gas was low, and I wanted to know if they had Fairlife chocolate milk before making the drive. I specifically asked the employee who answered if she could please check, and she responded, “Uhhhhh, ummmm, we’re busy and I can’t do that,” then hung up on me. I drove there anyway, and the store was essentially empty. When I arrived, I asked the employee if she was the one who had hung up on me, and then asked to speak to a manager. When the manager came to the front, I explained what had happened and pointed to the employee so he would know exactly who I was referring to. As I pointed her out and looked toward her, she shook her head from side to side while pressing her lips together in what appeared to be a mocking “ha ha” gesture, directly in front of the manager. I immediately asked him, “Did you just see that?” and his response was simply, “How can I help you?” Wow. He made no meaningful effort to address her behavior.
The employee also told me, “I checked and we don’t have any,” referring to the Fairlife chocolate milk. When I personally checked the freezer, not only did they have it, the shelf was fully stocked. I immediately told the manager. When I went to check out, I declined to have the same employee serve me and requested another cashier. That cashier apologized on her behalf but then repeated the explanation that the employee supposedly “didn’t hear me” when I called. That explanation was directly contradicted by the employee’s own words. If she truly did not hear me, why did she respond to my request by saying, “Uhhhhh, ummmm, we’re busy and I can’t do that,” before hanging up? I also asked the manager for her name because I intended to file a formal complaint, and he initially appeared reluctant to identify her before eventually giving me her name. This was not simply poor customer service. It was an employee who told me she had checked and the milk was unavailable when the shelf was fully stocked, followed by an excuse that was contradicted by what she herself said on the phone, while she openly mocked a customer in front of management. The manager's failure to meaningfully intervene was equally troubling.
This type of employee conduct, coupled with management's failure to meaningfully intervene, is a serious liability for the company. Customers should not have to wonder whether they will be disrespected, mocked, or dismissed when they are simply trying to spend their money. I have spent a significant amount of money at Food Lion, but after this experience, I am seriously reconsidering whether I will continue spending my money at Food Lion.
