I want to start by saying that I have been shopping at this Food Lion for a long time, and until today, I have never felt the need to make a complaint about an employee. This morning, however, I had an extremely uncomfortable interaction with one of the employees working the front end. I’ve seen her before and have generally found her to be pleasant, so I was surprised by the way I was treated today. While I was checking out, she continuously watched me and appeared to scrutinize everything I was doing. I was scanning my groceries directly from my cart, which is something I have always done when I only have a small amount of groceries. I paid for everything, and my total was approximately $80. In fact, I had just won nearly $200 from the lottery, so there was absolutely no reason for me to steal anything. While bagging my groceries, I accidentally scanned the milk twice. She immediately commented, “See, this is too much. I don’t even know how you know what you scanned.” The comment was unnecessary, condescending, and frankly, embarrassing. Most of my groceries were already on the counter, and I only had a few remaining items in the cart. There was nothing about what I was doing that warranted the level of scrutiny I was receiving. I am a young Black man, and I do not casually accuse people of racial bias. However, the way I was watched and spoken to throughout this interaction made me feel singled out and profiled. Whether that was her intention or not, that is how her behavior came across, and it is not something I should have to tolerate while simply shopping for groceries. She then proceeded to tell me that next time I should not scan my groceries that way because it was “too much work.” If there is a preferred way customers are supposed to use the self-checkout, that can be communicated respectfully. What is not acceptable is treating a paying customer as though they are automatically suspicious and then becoming irritated when they do not check out according to an employee’s personal preference. I paid for every single item I had. I did not steal anything, and I did not give her any reason to treat me as though I had. Her behavior was unnecessary, disrespectful, and completely inappropriate for someone working in customer service. I am bringing this to management’s attention because I would hope Food Lion takes concerns about profiling and customer treatment seriously. Customers should not have to wonder whether they are being watched or treated differently because of the color of their skin. If an employee has an issue with how a customer is using the self-checkout, there is a professional way to address it. Today’s interaction was not that.

I have been to this Food Lion location a few times. They are well stocked and I am typically greeted by at least one employee. I have always been able to find what I am looking for. The store appears clean and organized.
