I stopped in early in the morning with my 15-month-old niece and planned to get her a donut and a plain cup of milk. I was surprised when I was told that they were “not allowed” to sell a cup of milk. There also weren’t any small cartons or bottles of milk available in the cooler, so there was no alternative available for her. I reached out to Dunkin corporate afterward because I genuinely wanted to know whether this was a company-wide policy. They explained that while plain milk is not considered a standard retail product, most Dunkin locations are independently owned and operated, and it is ultimately up to the individual store owner whether they choose to sell it. Knowing that makes this experience more frustrating, because this appears to be a choice being made at the store level rather than something employees are required to follow across all Dunkin locations. I completely understand that businesses need policies and that employees cannot accommodate every request. However, refusing to sell a simple cup of milk when milk is already readily available behind the counter seems unnecessarily rigid, particularly at a business serving breakfast and families with young children. After looking through other reviews for this location, I noticed that I’m apparently not the only customer who has been frustrated by this kind of thing. There seems to be a theme of difficulty with customizations and relatively simple customer requests. Obviously, not every request can or should be accommodated, but when multiple customers are commenting on the same general issue, I think it is worth management taking seriously. I want to be clear that I don’t blame the employee who helped me, as she seemed to simply be following the policy she had been given. My frustration is with the policy itself and the apparent lack of flexibility at this location. I really hope the franchise owner or management will reconsider some of these practices and allow employees to use a little more common sense and flexibility with reasonable customer requests. Being able to purchase a plain cup of milk with a young child’s breakfast really should not be this complicated.
